Recurrent urinary tract infection is a common ailment that makes life and normal functioning difficult, mainly due to excessively frequent urination. Usually, it is mainly women who struggle with it, which is conditioned by the anatomical structure – a short urethra and a small distance between the anus and the urethral opening. Unfortunately, genetic predisposition can also determine the formation of inflammation or bladder infections. In such cases, the antibodies that would provide antibacterial prophylaxis are not excreted in the urine. How to recognize the causes of such a state and, above all, how to prevent the condition, which is a serious difficulty in everyday life?
Recurrent cystitis – what are the causes of this unpleasant condition?
Genetic predisposition, associated with the lack of secretion of antibodies that prevent the growth of bacteria, most often results recurrence of bladder inflammation. In such a case, the infection may occur even several times a year, affecting the quality of life of a given person. Unfortunately, current diagnostics and tests do not guarantee treatment that would prevent recurrence of the infection. Theses are very often stated cystitis in children already in infancy. In many cases of such diseases, hospitalization is necessary, during which urine cultures diagnose, among others, resistance of bacteria to antibiotics, with no abnormalities in the functioning of the urinary and reproductive systems.
Symptoms of cystitis – it is impossible to overlook!
Holding urine causes its retention, and ultimately creates ideal conditions for the development of bacteria. The most typical symptoms cystitis is excessive pressure on the bladder, frequent urination in increased amounts and an unpleasant burning sensation after urination. Sometimes there are also additional symptoms, such as: involuntary urination, pain above the pubis, urination at night, its unpleasant odor or changed color. Observing any disturbing symptoms should prompt you to visit your doctor as soon as possible.
Prevent first, then treat!
Recurrence of cystitis can largely be prevented by practicing the right lifestyle. It is very important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, not to hold on to urine when you need to urinate. It is also recommended to remember to defecate after sexual intercourse. Another recommendation for practicing a lifestyle to prevent bladder infections is to drink cranberry juice, which inhibits the deposition of bacteria in the mucous membrane. Hygiene is very important in this regard. Remember to wash your genitals every day, while maintaining the right direction from the urethral opening to the anus to prevent the transfer of bacteria.
Inflammation of the lower urinary tract – if you have not been able to prevent it, be sure to take treatment!
In people who struggle with frequent cystitis, and the diagnosis indicates that it is related to sexual activity, it is suggested to take an antibiotic after sexual intercourse. The antibiotic is recommended by the doctor, based on the results of the antibiogram (urine culture test). Usually taking such a drug lasts from 3 to 7 days. In addition, continuous prophylaxis consists in taking a low-dose antibacterial agent daily or 3 times a week before bedtime. This treatment is practiced in women who recurrence of cystitis occur at least a few times a year, and are not related to sexual intercourse. Then Furagin, co-trimoxazole, trimethoprim are administered. Usually, the symptoms subside after a few days. Sometimes, the method of immunoprophylaxis is also used, which somewhat resembles a vaccine, aimed at increasing the body’s resistance to bacterial infections.
