Sometimes making croutons for beer at home is faster than running to the store. And cheaper, for that matter. From what is at hand: almost any bread will do, spices to taste, salt, oil, garlic if desired. In this article we will try to figure out how to make croutons in the oven.
Bread for crackers can be taken both fresh and slightly stale (it can be cut into thinner slices). As for the density, here you need to try: someone will like light and crispy white crackers more, while others will like firm and fragrant rye crackers. If you take stale bread, then make sure that it has not deteriorated: there was no mold and an unpleasant smell.
Slicing depends on your preferences and the quality of the bread. With a good knife, even fresh crumbling bread can be cut into thin slices. The most common cutting methods are: sticks (1x1x5 and more), cubes (with a side of 1 cm), stripes, freeform, etc. In one of the pubs, we met a very original cut: the slices of bread were large (the entire cut of the “brick”) and very thin; they were translucent and resembled a bread cobweb. However, for such cutting, you will most likely need a special machine.
Advice. Cut the bread thin enough so that it dries evenly in the oven. Large pieces may remain soft inside. If you are going to serve with sauce, then for convenience it is better to make long crackers.
Choosing spices for crackers
The choice of seasonings depends, of course, on taste preferences. You can sprinkle croutons with a mixture of various spices, sprinkle with olive or sunflower oil, croutons with garlic are especially fragrant.
Spices for crackers can be chosen from these:
- paprika
- hops-suneli
- dried minced garlic
- ground peppers (red, black, etc.)
- italian herbs
- oregano
- etc.
If you want to achieve a brighter taste, you can use store-bought seasonings with flavor enhancers, including bouillon cubes (they can be dissolved in water and sprinkled with crackers from a spray bottle).
Recipe for crackers for beer in the oven
- white bread – 0,5 loaves
- black bread (you can Borodino) – 0,5 loaves
- olive oil (or sunflower) – a few tablespoons
- salt and spices to taste
- mustard
Preparation:
Mix together: spices, oil, mustard, salt, mix thoroughly. Roll the slices of bread in this mixture, not letting them soak too much. Preheat the oven, put the crackers on the oven in one layer. Bake for an hour on the smallest fire. Readiness check – golden color and crispy “state”.
Recipe with tricky roll
- bread – 1 loaf
- vegetable oil – a few tablespoons
- salt and spices to taste
Preparation:
Turn on the oven on medium heat, it will warm up while the bread is cooking. If there is a desire to make croutons with garlic flavor, then you can grate the bread before slicing.
Cut the bread into small cubes, put it in a plastic bag (the volume of the bag should be 1,5-2 times the volume of the bread). Pour salt and spices there, then tie the bag, leaving air in it. Next, you need to carefully twist and shake the bag so that the spices mix with the bread.
Untie the bag, pour in the oil (you can pour it with a spoon on the walls of the bag, and not on the cubes of bread), tie it with air and mix thoroughly again. Put on a baking sheet in one or more layers, dry over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally (every 5-7 minutes). The drying time depends on the desired result, the type of bread, the size of the cubes and other factors. On average – about 30-40 minutes.
Serving homemade crackers
Fragrant crackers can be served both warm and cold. For more flavor, you can sprinkle with herbs or lightly sprinkle with lemon juice. A variety of sauces will be an excellent addition: tomato, garlic based on sour cream or mayonnaise, cheese and others.
There are many options for making croutons in the oven. In some recipes, crackers are first dried in the oven without spices, and only after that they are sprinkled with spices, while in others, after drying in the oven, the finished product is fried in a pan in oil with spices.
