Greetings to Internet travelers who accidentally wandered into this site! Are you hiccuping? 😉 Now we will fix everything! In the article “Hiccups: causes, treatment, simple ways to get rid of” – the necessary information on this topic, plus a video.

What is hiccups

Hiccups are involuntary abrupt sounds emitted by the throat during a convulsive contraction of the abdominal muscle.

Despite the fact that doctors have studied various respiratory disorders, many questions remain to the physiological reaction called hiccups, which is very difficult to control.

The convulsive contractions of the diaphragm prevent you from breathing normally. After short intervals, breathing is suddenly interrupted, the flow of air stops, which makes the whole body shudder. Short-term suffocation occurs. The glottis closes abruptly, a characteristic stifled sound escapes from the larynx.

From an evolutionary point of view, such a reflex can be explained by the body’s need to get rid of the air trapped in the stomach. You just need to find a way to remove it. There are cases of pathological hiccups, when the irritant is internal inflammation or swelling.

With the identification of such conditions, you cannot do without a doctor. In most cases, hiccups are a harmless condition that stops as soon as favorable conditions are created for the body.

Causes of hiccups

The reasons that lead to hiccups are different. The most common are:

  1. Hypothermia. Young children, including infants, are more susceptible to this condition.
  2. Overeating, when the stomach stretches more than usual during the meal.
  3. Alcoholic intoxication. The intercostal muscles and the diaphragm cease to perform their function efficiently, allowing excess air into the stomach.
  4. Eating dry food (buns, baking).

How to stop hiccups

Since the hiccups, in most cases, go away on their own, there is no need to fight it as suddenly as it began to fight. If you still want to speed up the process of getting rid of the uncomfortable state, you can take the following actions:

Fill your lungs with air as much as possible. Take as deep a breath as possible and hold your breath.

Create conditions for lack of air using a regular bag. Bring the small bag to your mouth and nose. By firmly applying it, create conditions under which air cannot enter it. Fix the feeling of suffocation for 10-15 minutes, then take a deep breath.

You can align the diaphragm like this. Become even, take a deep breath, hold your breath, sit down, bend forward, linger for half a minute.

Stretch the body as much as possible. Stretch to a crunch in the bones. Hold your arms above your head, continuing to take slow, deep breaths in and out.

You can quickly drink a glass of water in one gulp. The water will take up space in the stomach, pushing the air out. After that, you can stick out your chest, as they say, with a wheel and breathe through your nose for a while.

You can enhance the effect with drinking water if you plug your ears with your fingers. True, one cannot do without an assistant here.

The organs will get into the correct position with such manipulation. Become straight, fold your arms behind your back, bend over, raise your head so as to look forward. The pose is uncomfortable, but very effective.

In this position, swallow at least 10 times. If there is an assistant, you can replace the swallowing movements with a natural intake of water in small sips.

If the reason is hypothermia, you just need to warm up.

When hiccups are not associated with hypothermia, overeating, alcohol intoxication, and often occurs, you need to consult a doctor for advice.
