Reading technique 1st quarter 1st grade: texts and the norm according to the Federal State Educational Standard
In the 1st grade of the 1st quarter, the reading technique is checked especially carefully. The ability to read is an important skill for a child at this age, on which the success of the assimilation of knowledge depends.
How the reading technique is assessed and on which texts
Reading technique is a set of several characteristics by which reading ability can be measured. In grade 1, it is checked at least 2 times a year.
The reading technique consists of the following skills:
- Mindfulness. This skill is checked as follows: after reading the text material, the teacher asks questions. The student’s answers show whether he understood what he read or not. First-graders have a small vocabulary, so it is difficult to select text materials for them.
- Speed. This skill means how many words the child managed to read in 1 minute.
- The way of reading. For students in grade 1 of the 1st quarter, this parameter is rarely taken into account, since children are just getting acquainted with letters and sounds. More often they can only read syllables.
- Right. It is assessed how many mistakes the student made.
- Expressiveness. This parameter includes the use of pauses, the correct placement of stress, the selection of the desired intonation.
Fiction or popular science texts are suitable for verification. They should be unfamiliar to the child, but understandable, consist of short sentences.
It is undesirable for the text material to contain punctuation marks other than periods and commas. It should fit on one page, not contain pictures, diagrams and dialogues.
It is better to test the reading technique in the form of a game. If the child is overwhelmed, he will not be able to read the text material and answer the teacher’s questions.
How well the first grader reads and assimilates the read material depends on his future education.
The standards for a student of grade 1 are as follows:
- the child understands what he is reading about;
- a first grader pronounces words in syllables or in whole, pronounces them correctly and clearly;
- reading rate – 25-30 words / min.
The basic requirements for a student of grade 1 – he must read quickly and understand the material read. If in 1 min. if he manages to read more than 20 words, then he deserves an “excellent” grade, 16-20 – “good”, 10-15 – “satisfactory”, less than 10 – “unsatisfactory”.
The assessment of the reading technique in the 1st grade of the 1st quarter is symbolic. Children are just learning to read during this period. The learning outcomes will be noticeable only by the end of the 3rd quarter.
