All electric brushes for children from 3 years old are divided into categories by age:

The cheapest electric toothbrushes provide only a standard but improved brushing option. But in innovative models there are additional functions, the presence of which is necessary due to the peculiarities of the structure of the dentition, with some dental and general diseases.

Several device programs

In this case, we are not talking about the possibilities of changing power, but about the format of the device. The brushes can be provided with daily, enhanced or delicate cleaning.

There are models with the possibility of whitening tooth enamel, with a timer and a program for selecting the oscillation frequency and pulsation.

Power regulation

In modern electric toothbrushes, the provided power level is from 2 to 5. Adjustment allows you to choose the intensity of treatment depending on the sensitivity of the enamel, user preferences and oral hygiene features recommended by the dentist.

Increased pulsation frequency

Electric toothbrushes that maintain the highest possible pulsation frequency include devices capable of producing 40 pulsations per minute.

This feature allows you to easily cope with tartar and dense plaque. But it is not needed if the sensitivity of the tooth enamel is increased.

Synchronizing the device with a smartphone

3. Deep cleaning. In most models, this mode implies an extended hygiene procedure, for example, up to 3 minutes. Deep cleaning removes the dirt that remains when using an electric toothbrush in the standard mode.
4. Polishing. In this mode, the frequency of rotation or oscillation of the head is reduced, and the processing time is also reduced. A toothbrush in polishing mode is mainly used between evening and morning oral hygiene.
5. Lightening. Removes stains from enamel and brightens it by 1-2 tones. Lightening mode can include standard cleaning, increased by 30-60 seconds, or an effect similar to polishing.
6. gum massage. In the presence of the mode, the brush is used for intensive, but at the same time gentle treatment of the gums. Massage strengthens the gums, reduces the likelihood of bleeding. The mode is usually activated after the completion of the main program, although there are models in which it can be turned on separately.
7. Tongue cleaning. It differs from other programs in the shortest duration – up to 20 seconds. To remove plaque from the tongue, there are special nozzles provided for this purpose.

Cleaning technology

The technology for cleaning the teeth depends on the type of electric toothbrush.

We list them:

• Reciprocating. It is mainly provided in brushes with round heads. When the device is turned on, the villi deviate in a circle from the central axis. Reciprocating-rotating technology provides high-quality cleansing of interdental spaces.
• Return-sweeping. Typical for brushes with oval heads. The bristles deflect to the right and left, resembling the movements of a broom. The design is very simple, but the reciprocating sweep technology is less efficient than the previous one.
• Pulsating. Most often complements the reciprocating sweeping and reciprocating-rotating care technology. The bristles not only deviate to the sides or move in a circle, but also extend and retract into the head, which provides a pulsating effect. This feature is usually referred to in electric toothbrushes as 3D mode.
• Sound. The amplitude of oscillations from 40 thousand per minute corresponds to frequencies that are heard at a distance. This explains the name of this technology – sound. The vibration that occurs ensures high-quality cleaning of the spaces between the teeth and breaks and removes plaque well.
• Ultrasonic. Ultrasound includes frequencies at which the number of vibrations of the bristles reaches 40-50 thousand per minute. That is, according to this parameter, ultrasonic brushes differ little from sonic ones, however, they are considered more effective. This is due to the fact that ultrasonic waves penetrate as deeply as possible into the gaps between the teeth and into the pockets. They also destroy bacteria that form plaque on the teeth. However, sonic electric brushes clean orthodontic structures better and safer.

Power supplies

Modern electric toothbrushes have low voltage power supplies – up to 12 volts. Although there are models with combined power supply from 220V and 12V.

Most models have a battery built into the handle or a replacement battery pack. The power supply is reliably protected from moisture ingress.

Power supply option:

Batteries type AAA or AA. Battery-powered devices are lighter compared to battery-powered models. The number of batteries depends on the brush model and can be from two or more pieces.

Batteries are divided into 3 types:

• NiMH. Nickel metal hydride. They are compact in size, not sensitive to cold, they can be stored charged, but they are quickly discharged.

When choosing an electric toothbrush, pay attention to the design of the nozzles, as it determines the convenience and effectiveness of hygiene, as well as the possibility of specific applications.

standard round

The round head brush head is designed for standard brushing intensity, which is not suitable for those with particularly sensitive teeth.

Provides a gentle effect and penetrates well into hard-to-reach spaces. Most often they come with models that work on the principle of reciprocating-rotating movements.

Standard oval

As well as round should not be used with increased sensitivity of the enamel. Oval-shaped nozzles are equipped with brushes with reciprocating sweeping cleaning technology.

The advantage of oval over round is that it can cover a large area.

Round for sensitive teeth

It differs from standard round ones primarily in softer villi, although other design features are possible. Provides a gentle effect on tooth enamel and gum tissue.

Oval for sensitive teeth

As well as the previous version, it is distinguished by the softest possible bristles and a number of features that reduce discomfort.

Combined

They consist of two combined parts – oval and round. Provides optimal removal of food residues from hard-to-reach places.

The combined nozzle is not a standard one, so in most cases it is included as an extra.

For irrigator

Supplied with irrigator. Instead of bristles in such a nozzle, a nozzle through which a jet of water exits under pressure.

In stationary irrigators, several standard nozzles are usually provided, which makes it possible to maintain a high hygiene of the procedure when using the device with the whole family.

orthodontic

This is a specialized nozzle, which is necessary if braces or other structures are installed in the oral cavity. It is distinguished by a special arrangement of bristles, thanks to which they easily penetrate under the braces and effectively clean the space under them.

Periodontal

Basically go as additional to irrigators. The device has a soft nozzle that provides gentle cleaning of periodontal pockets – places where the gum is adjacent to the surface of the teeth.

Implant cleaning tips

• In the presence of sealed teeth and orthodontic constructions, the use of sound and standard models is recommended. Ultrasonic devices propagate waves that cause microvibration, which leads to a deterioration in the strength of the connecting elements.
• If soft cleaning is desired, then it is better to stop the choice on devices with a reciprocating rotational pattern of movements. For more intensive cleaning, vibrating technology is suitable, but you need to get used to it gradually.
• The rotation speed of the heads used in brushes intended for children should not be more than 18 thousand revolutions per minute, otherwise fragile enamel may be injured.
• Persons with hypersensitivity of tooth enamel need brushes with the softest bristles.
• Synthetic bristles are less prone to wear. Pathogenic microorganisms do not multiply in such bristles. But if there is an allergy to synthetics, then brushes made from natural raw materials are needed.

In addition, you need to pay attention to:

• Head size. Basically, there are brushes with heads from 18 to 35 mm on sale. The recommended size for children is no more than 22 mm. An adult is more suitable for heads ranging in size from 25 to 27 cm.
• Rigidity. For adults with normal enamel sensitivity and good gum condition, brushes with medium hard bristles are suitable. Soft bristles are chosen for delicate reading and for children.
• Handle material. It is better if the case is equipped with a rubberized insert on the sides, as it reduces slipping while using the device.
• Weight. No more than 200 grams is considered optimal. Products that weigh more are inconvenient for oral hygiene.

How to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush?

The operation of electric toothbrushes does not cause any particular difficulties. Certified models are always supplied with instructions that describe in detail all the moments of preparing the device, its use and subsequent care.

There are several basic rules to follow:

• Before use, you need to make sure that the charging of the device is enough for the hygiene procedure.
• Before applying the paste, the head must be slightly moistened with water.
• The amount of toothpaste per procedure is a pea about 5 mm in size. Using more will result in excessive foaming, making the process more difficult.
• Care involves a smooth movement of the head from one tooth to another with a delay on each for 2-3 seconds. There is no need to make any additional movements, since the electric models are already programmed for a certain mode of operation.
• Cleansing is carried out on the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of the teeth, as well as the gum tissues adjacent to them. If the device does not provide for an additional mode of delicate cleaning of the gums, then they are cared for after the brush is turned off.

Toothbrush care step by step:

• After cleaning, rinse the bristles under running water. Soap is allowed.
• It is better to store the device in an upright position.
• Once every 2-3 months, immerse the nozzle in a solution of Miramistin or Chlorhexidine for 1-2 hours. This will prevent the formation of bacteria.

Electric toothbrushes are also appreciated by persons with disabilities, as they do not require much effort during operation.

Dentists note that children from 3 years old who use a modern device are less afraid of examination and treatment in the office.

This is most likely due to the fact that they get used to the buzzing of the electric brush and are no longer afraid of similar sounds from dental devices.
