Contents

В The article presents a rating of the fifteen best electric toothbrushes from different manufacturers for children and adults, also describes in detail the types, criteria for choosing models depending on the design, programs and age.

The list is compiled on the basis of market analysis, customer reviews, characteristics and their compliance with the price-quality ratio.

A list of the best manufacturers that produce quality products is presented. Use the content to find the information you need.

The device and the principle of operation

An electric toothbrush (ETB) is a product whose bristles move not under the influence of their own efforts, but are activated by an electric motor.

The motor is in the case, and a battery or batteries are used to power it. Vibration of the bristles occurs in an up-down direction or in the form of age-rotational movements.

Electric toothbrushes differ in size, features of use, and the presence of additional functions.

  • brush head. In most models, it is easy to change to a new one.
  • Trunk. The head is attached to it.
  • handle. Inside there is a control unit, a motor and a source of electricity.

Devices with a battery additionally have a charging unit. EZSHCH working directly from the electrical network are also produced, but they are not so popular, as they limit mobility.

In appearance, an electric brush differs from a conventional one only in a massive handle.

Important selection criteria

The prototype of modern electric toothbrushes was invented in 1954 by Dr. Philipp-Guy Voog in Switzerland. The device was originally intended for use by persons with limited motor skills and for the care of orthodontic structures. The device worked only from the socket.

The cordless electric toothbrush was introduced in 1960 by General Electric. She worked from a nickel-cadmium battery. Such a power source was extremely inconvenient, as it was large, required constant recharging and could not be replaced.

By 1990, standards had been developed that only allowed low-voltage power supplies to be used in electric toothbrushes.

Currently, more than 3000 models of such devices have been patented, differing in their operation features, the presence of a timer, additional modes, and the design of the villi. In Japan, not so long ago, the public was announced an EPS that connects to a smartphone and a computer.

Types of electric toothbrushes, how they work

Electric toothbrushes are divided into 4 types: standard, sonic, ultrasonic and ionic.

Standard

Equipped with a round head rotating in different modes. In a minute, the number of rotational movements of the head is from 2 to 30 thousand. Standard electric brushes gently clean the surface of the teeth, so they are suitable for children and those with sensitive tooth enamel.

Example: Oral-B Kids model Star Wars for kids.

Sound

Their design includes a membrane that generates sound waves. The vibrations from them pass to the bristles of the brush, which ensures the formation of a foam of a uniform texture from toothpaste, water and air.

Example: Soocas X3U model.

Rating of electric toothbrushes 2022, comparison of prices, characteristics TOP 20, how to choose

Ultrasonic

The electric motor of the devices converts electricity into ultrasonic high-frequency waves. These waves propagate from the bristles for 5 mm, and the number of pulsations can reach 192 million per minute.

Thanks to ultrasound, electric toothbrushes destroy plaque well and are able to cope even with not too hard tartar.

Example: Model LKI GS800.

Ionic

A strip or rod coated with titanium dioxide is embedded inside the case. After turning on the device, ion molecules are released, which enhance the therapeutic effect of the components of the toothpaste and at the same time have a disinfecting effect.

Efficiency compared to conventional

There are several obvious benefits to using an electric toothbrush:

  • The duration of a hygienic procedure for caring for teeth is reduced by 2 times compared to using a conventional brush. In models with a timer, after 2 minutes, a signal is turned on, indicating the end of the treatment time.
  • Provides the most effective cleaning of teeth, especially in gaps and hard-to-reach places, completely removing food debris and plaque from them.
  • It does not require special efforts during hygiene, which is especially convenient for people with muscle atrophy, hand fractures and with disabilities.
  • When choosing a device with interchangeable nozzles, several people can use one device.

Brands on the market

There are about 65 well-known ESP manufacturers around the world. Most of the production facilities are concentrated in China.

The most popular brands are:

  • Braun Oral-B.
  • Philips.
  • Xiaomi.
  • CS Medica.
  • Revyline.
  • B.Well.
  • Donfeel.
  • Hapica.
  • Panasonic.
  • Waterpik.
  • TIME.
  • Jetpik.
  • YOU SEE.
  • Seago.

The brands listed above produce electric toothbrushes in various modifications and they have both successful and not so good models, so it is important to study the reviews, while expensive means better, it does not work here.

Age restrictions

Dentists recommend buying electric toothbrushes for children over the age of 3 years. The ban on earlier use is due to the fact that babies can be frightened by buzzing, and too intense exposure can adversely affect the condition of tooth enamel.

Rating of electric toothbrushes 2022, comparison of prices, characteristics TOP 20, how to choose

However, a number of manufacturers produce such products for children from 5 months. They are distinguished by a soft bristle brush, which is mainly made of silicone, low speed and range of motion.

Rating of electric toothbrushes 2022, comparison of prices, characteristics TOP 20, how to choose

All electric brushes for children from 3 years old are divided into categories by age:

  • Devices for babies from 3 to 5 years old have a rubberized small handle and soft fibers (denoted as “extra soft”). During cleaning, they can make various melodies.
  • Brushes for children from 5 to 6 years old are best chosen with sensors that control the pressing force. The bristles are chosen moderately soft, and the head is not too large.
  • For children from 7 to 10 years old, you can already buy universal models. They practically do not differ in device and functions from models for adults. But it is better to give preference to electrical devices, which provides for a gentle care regime.

There is no upper age limit for using electric toothbrushes. But in old age, the majority have dentures, and the gums are highly sensitive, so models that guarantee soft and gentle oral hygiene are more convenient and effective.

Types

In addition to one electric brush, you can also purchase sets that can consist of several brushes with nozzles, as well as an irrigator.

A set of two or three battery-powered or rechargeable brushes

You can buy a set of one or two adults and one children’s brush. The set can also consist of electric brushes with different nozzles or operating modes.

Brushes and irrigator (dental center)

An irrigator is a device with which teeth and tooth gaps are cleaned using water supplied under pressure.

The emitted jets act gently, have a massaging effect, gently clean dirt from braces and prostheses.

Irrigators are available in two versions:

  • Portable are compact in size and can be taken with you on a trip or a business trip.
  • Stationary ones are most often powered by the mains, and their tank for water or treatment solution is very capacious.

Functions and Features

The cheapest electric toothbrushes provide only a standard but improved brushing option. But in innovative models there are additional functions, the presence of which is necessary due to the peculiarities of the structure of the dentition, with some dental and general diseases.

Several device programs

In this case, we are not talking about the possibilities of changing power, but about the format of the device. The brushes can be provided with daily, enhanced or delicate cleaning.

There are models with the possibility of whitening tooth enamel, with a timer and a program for selecting the oscillation frequency and pulsation.

Automatic frequency control

This feature is only found in ultrasonic and sonic products. In the presence of auto-adjustment, the device automatically selects the oscillation frequency, taking into account the mode selected by the user.

A number of electric models operate only at frequencies pre-set during their production, but there are devices in which this parameter is also changed manually.

pressure sensor

Controls the degree of pressing the head to the surface of the teeth. With a sensor, you can avoid strong pressure, which leads to damage to the enamel and gum tissue. An audible signal is given when the allowable pressing intensity is increased.

Timer

Allows you to control the duration of the hygiene procedure. The timer setting depends on the selected mode. The standard one provides for the treatment of 30 seconds for each quarter of the oral cavity, that is, only 2 minutes.

When choosing deep cleaning, the time increases, when polishing, it decreases.

Increased oscillation frequency

The oscillation frequency is considered large if it reaches 40 or more thousand oscillations per minute.

The increased speed increases the efficiency of cleaning the teeth, but this function is undesirable, for example, with increased sensitivity of the gums and tooth enamel. Therefore, it is better to buy a device with such an opportunity after consulting a doctor.

Increased pulsation frequency

Electric toothbrushes that maintain the highest possible pulsation frequency include devices capable of producing 40 pulsations per minute.

This feature allows you to easily cope with tartar and dense plaque. But it is not needed if the sensitivity of the tooth enamel is increased.

Memory (remembering) the last used mode

The function is convenient if the electric brush has many modes, but is used mainly in one of them. When turned on, it immediately activates it.

bristle wear indicator

Nozzles require replacement every 3-6 months. If it is not carried out, then the brush will no longer work as efficiently. The indicator in devices is implemented in different ways. Most often this is a change in the color of the bristles of the brushes. But there are models with a time counter, after which the nozzle must be replaced.

Charging stand

The kit includes a stand with a charger. After the hygiene procedure, it will be enough to put the brush on it, and it will always be charged.

Charging the EPS from the USB port

If there is a USB port, the electric brush is also charged from a tablet, computer, power bank, car cigarette lighter.

Stand for accessories

Basically, removable heads are stored in such a stand. In portable devices, the device comes separately; in sets with an irrigator, it is often built into the housing cover.

The stand is convenient if you often take an electric toothbrush with you on trips.

Display

Most often, the screen is built into the body of the handle. The display shows the selected mode, timer countdown, charge level, error code in case of breakdowns. More information is displayed on remote displays, but they require separate power supplies.

Wall Mount

This is a separate fixture that is fixed to the surface of the wall, after which a brush is inserted into it. Mounting is convenient in cases where there is no place for an electric toothbrush on the shelves in the bathroom.

Cases and cases

Cases are called dense and rigid containers, cases are their counterparts made of soft materials. They are convenient when transporting the product, as they protect it from dirt and damage.

The containers can act as a disinfector or an adapter for recharging from mobile devices.

Number of operating modes

As a rule, there are 12 of them. In the simplest electric brushes, one is usually installed, in innovative products – 12 or more.

  1. Daily cleaning routine. Provided in standard toothbrushes, working on the principle of reciprocating sweeping or reciprocating-rotating movements. In daily mode, the bristles not only rotate in a circle or oscillate, but also deviate deep into the head and return back. The daily brushing mode is more effective than the cleansing, in which the villi move in the same plane, since the electric brush treats the teeth from all sides and cleans the spaces between them.
  2. Delicate cleaning. A program that involves gentle cleaning of the tooth surface is necessary if the enamel is hypersensitive or the gums bleed periodically. In standard electric toothbrushes, the gentle mode means that the speed of rotation of the head is reduced. In ultrasonic and sonic models, when choosing a delicate cleaning, the amplitude of oscillations decreases. Gentle cleansing reduces the discomfort that occurs with increased sensitivity of the gums and teeth.
  3. Deep cleaning. In most models, this mode implies an extended hygiene procedure, for example, up to 3 minutes. Deep cleaning removes the dirt that remains when using an electric toothbrush in the standard mode.
  4. Polishing. In this mode, the frequency of rotation or oscillation of the head is reduced, and the processing time is also reduced. A toothbrush in polishing mode is mainly used between evening and morning oral hygiene.
  5. Lightening. Removes stains from enamel and brightens it by 1-2 tones. Lightening mode can include standard cleaning, increased by 30-60 seconds, or an effect similar to polishing.
  6. gum massage. In the presence of the mode, the brush is used for intensive, but at the same time gentle treatment of the gums. Massage strengthens the gums, reduces the likelihood of bleeding. The mode is usually activated after the completion of the main program, although there are models in which it can be turned on separately.
  7. Tongue cleaning. It differs from other programs in the shortest duration – up to 20 seconds. To remove plaque from the tongue, there are special nozzles provided for this purpose.

Cleaning technology

The technology for cleaning the teeth depends on the type of electric toothbrush.

We list them:

  • Reciprocating. It is mainly provided in brushes with round heads. When the device is turned on, the villi deviate in a circle from the central axis. Reciprocating-rotating technology provides high-quality cleansing of interdental spaces.
  • Return-sweeping. Typical for brushes with oval heads. The bristles deflect to the right and left, resembling the movements of a broom. The design is very simple, but the reciprocating sweep technology is less efficient than the previous one.
  • Pulsating. Most often complements the reciprocating sweeping and reciprocating-rotating care technology. The bristles not only deviate to the sides or move in a circle, but also extend and retract into the head, which provides a pulsating effect. This feature is usually referred to in electric toothbrushes as 3D mode.
  • Sound. The amplitude of oscillations from 40 thousand per minute corresponds to frequencies that are heard at a distance. This explains the name of this technology – sound. The vibration that occurs ensures high-quality cleaning of the spaces between the teeth and breaks and removes plaque well.
  • Ultrasonic. Ultrasound includes frequencies at which the number of vibrations of the bristles reaches 40-50 thousand per minute. That is, according to this parameter, ultrasonic brushes differ little from sonic ones, however, they are considered more effective. This is due to the fact that ultrasonic waves penetrate as deeply as possible into the gaps between the teeth and into the pockets. They also destroy bacteria that form plaque on the teeth. However, sonic electric brushes clean orthodontic structures better and safer.

Power supplies

Modern electric toothbrushes have low voltage power supplies – up to 12 volts. Although there are models with combined power supply from 220V and 12V.

Most models have a battery built into the handle or a replacement battery pack. The power supply is reliably protected from moisture ingress.

Power supply option:

Batteries type AAA or AA. Battery-powered devices are lighter compared to battery-powered models. The number of batteries depends on the brush model and can be from two or more pieces.

Batteries are divided into 3 types:

  • NiMH. Nickel metal hydride. They are compact in size, not sensitive to cold, they can be stored charged, but they are quickly discharged.
  • Li-Ion. Lithium-ion batteries have no memory effect, so they can be recharged at any time. They give a charge even at sub-zero temperatures, but during long-term storage they need to be recharged periodically.
  • Li-pol. Lithium polymers are comparable in performance to Li-Ion, but weigh less.

Electric brushes with non-replaceable batteries in some cases, as already mentioned, are charged via a USB port.

Nozzles and their functions

When choosing an electric toothbrush, pay attention to the design of the nozzles, as it determines the convenience and effectiveness of hygiene, as well as the possibility of specific applications.

standard round

The round head brush head is designed for standard brushing intensity, which is not suitable for those with particularly sensitive teeth.

Provides a gentle effect and penetrates well into hard-to-reach spaces. Most often they come with models that work on the principle of reciprocating-rotating movements.

Supplied with irrigator. Instead of bristles in such a nozzle, a nozzle through which a jet of water exits under pressure.

In stationary irrigators, several standard nozzles are usually provided, which makes it possible to maintain a high hygiene of the procedure when using the device with the whole family.

orthodontic

This is a specialized nozzle, which is necessary if braces or other structures are installed in the oral cavity. It is distinguished by a special arrangement of bristles, thanks to which they easily penetrate under the braces and effectively clean the space under them.

Additional selection criteria

When choosing electric toothbrushes, there are a few key points to consider:

  • In the presence of sealed teeth and orthodontic constructions, the use of sound and standard models is recommended. Ultrasonic devices propagate waves that cause microvibration, which leads to a deterioration in the strength of the connecting elements.
  • If soft cleaning is desired, then it is better to stop the choice on devices with a reciprocating rotational pattern of movements. For more intensive cleaning, vibrating technology is suitable, but you need to get used to it gradually.
  • The rotation speed of the heads used in brushes intended for children should not be more than 18 thousand revolutions per minute, otherwise fragile enamel may be injured.
  • Persons with hypersensitivity of tooth enamel need brushes with the softest bristles.
  • Synthetic bristles are less prone to wear. Pathogenic microorganisms do not multiply in such bristles. But if there is an allergy to synthetics, then brushes made from natural raw materials are needed.

In addition, you need to pay attention to:

  • Head size. Basically, there are brushes with heads from 18 to 35 mm on sale. The recommended size for children is no more than 22 mm. An adult is more suitable for heads ranging in size from 25 to 27 cm.
  • Rigidity. For adults with normal enamel sensitivity and good gum condition, brushes with medium hard bristles are suitable. Soft bristles are chosen for delicate reading and for children.
  • Handle material. It is better if the case is equipped with a rubberized insert on the sides, as it reduces slipping while using the device.
  • Weight. No more than 200 grams is considered optimal. Products that weigh more are inconvenient for oral hygiene.

Oral-B products

The Oral-B brand began to develop actively in the USA in the early 1950s. The company was engaged in the development and mass production of products intended for hygienic care of teeth and oral cavity.

A little earlier, the company Braun GmbH was established in Germany, engaged in the production of small appliances for the home.

Subsequently, the two brands merged into one, their products today are innovative and easy-to-use electric toothbrushes under the Oral-B brand.

Brand models produced today are products supplemented with pressure control sensors, dozens of cleaning modes, a timer, and the ability to synchronize with a tablet or smartphone.

How to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush?

The operation of electric toothbrushes does not cause any particular difficulties. Certified models are always supplied with instructions that describe in detail all the moments of preparing the device, its use and subsequent care.

There are several basic rules to follow:

  • Before use, you need to make sure that the charging of the device is enough for the hygiene procedure.
  • Before applying the paste, the head must be slightly moistened with water.
  • The amount of toothpaste per procedure is a pea about 5 mm in size. Using more will result in excessive foaming, making the process more difficult.
  • Care involves a smooth movement of the head from one tooth to another with a delay on each for 2-3 seconds. There is no need to make any additional movements, since the electric models are already programmed for a certain mode of operation.
  • Cleansing is carried out on the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of the teeth, as well as the gum tissues adjacent to them. If the device does not provide for an additional mode of delicate cleaning of the gums, then they are cared for after the brush is turned off.

Toothbrush care step by step:

  • After cleaning, rinse the bristles under running water. Soap is allowed.
  • It is better to store the device in an upright position.
  • Once every 2-3 months, immerse the nozzle in a solution of Miramistin or Chlorhexidine for 1-2 hours. This will prevent the formation of bacteria.
  • The nozzle in the absence of a replacement indicator is changed at least once every 6 months.

When using an electric brush, you must remember that increased pressure will not help you achieve a snow-white smile in 1-2 days, but will only provoke inflammation of the gums. The effect of enamel lightening will appear gradually over 2-3 weeks.

Противопоказания

There are no absolute contraindications to the use of electric brushes for oral care. If the device is chosen correctly, then it will not harm even prostheses, implants, and sealed teeth. But in some cases, you still have to temporarily abandon a convenient assistant.

The use of such devices is not recommended:

  • In the acute stage of gingivitis, stomatitis, periodontitis.
  • With the development of fluorosis – a disease that occurs with thinning and darkening of the enamel.
  • During the recovery period after surgery in the oral cavity.
  • With pathological tooth mobility of 3-4 degrees and hyperesthesia (increased sensitivity of the teeth).

In most cases, after a course of treatment, the use of an electric toothbrush is allowed to resume. But it is desirable that the attending dentist is not against its use.

Is it worth replacing a manual brush with an electric one – the opinions of dentists

Most dentists consider electric toothbrushing to be marginally more effective than manual toothbrushing. But with one condition – the use of an ordinary brush should be as correct as possible.

It is necessary to withstand the cleaning time, follow the technology of movements, make efforts to remove plaque from hard-to-reach places. Not everyone follows these rules.

Using an electric toothbrush is much easier because:

  • The movements of the bristles are already programmed, that is, it is enough to attach the head to the tooth.
  • Most models have a timer that allows you to withstand the duration of the procedure.
  • Nozzles change, periodically using those that will help to deep clean, polish or whiten.
  • Ultrasonic models not only clean the tooth surface, but also destroy the shell of bacteria, that is, they disinfect the oral cavity.

Electric toothbrushes are also appreciated by persons with disabilities, as they do not require much effort during operation.

Dentists note that children from 3 years old who use a modern device are less afraid of examination and treatment in the office.

This is most likely due to the fact that they get used to the buzzing of the electric brush and are no longer afraid of similar sounds from dental devices.

Having replaced a manual brush with an electric one, you should not forget that the effectiveness of hygiene depends not only on the capabilities of the device, but also on the condition of the bristles. They wear out in a few months, so the nozzles must not be forgotten to be changed.
