Raspberry Glenn: variety description
Raspberry “Glen” combines all the best qualities of culture. The variety was bred at the end of the last century by Scottish breeders. Today it is the most popular in Europe.
It is not a remontant hybrid that produces a very high yield of a first-class product. I fell in love not only with amateur gardeners, but also those who deal with raspberries on an industrial scale.
Raspberries of the “Glen” variety have a number of characteristic features:
- The variety has erect, strong shoots with many branches. Bushes can be very tall, under good conditions can reach up to three meters. But on average they are 1,5-2 meters in height. The root system is well developed. There are no spines on the stems.
- Fruit berries are very large, can reach up to 10 g, sweet, dark red. In terms of taste, the variety received the highest rating. They tolerate transportation well.
- Berries grow on branches, up to twenty on each. When ripe, they create a large load on the bush, therefore, the bushes require a garter on the trellis.
- The variety is resistant to disease.
It is a medium-ripening variety that begins to ripen in July and bears fruit for a month. From one bush for several collections, you can collect up to 6 kg of berries.
Raspberries differ from other varieties of this crop and require special care:
- Raspberries “Glen” are planted taking into account that the bushes need a lot of space. Thickened plantings will give little harvest. The place should be well lit, but protected from direct sunlight. This strain is prone to sunburn and does well in the shade.
- For better fruiting, it is recommended to regularly fertilize. Raspberries respond well to organics.
- Watering and loosening the soil is carried out regularly as needed. Do not overfill, as an excess of moisture leads to diseases of the root system.
- The bushes are very tall, they are tied to trellises.
The variety tolerates frosts down to -30 degrees and is suitable for growing in cold regions without requiring shelter. It is ubiquitous in England and thrives in this climatic zone.
Berries are used universally. They can be canned, jams and preserves can be made. They are especially good in freezing, they do not lose their shape or taste
For twenty years of existence, the variety has proven itself well in the European market. Excellent taste, good transportability, high stable yield – this is what made Glen confidently outstripping its competitors.
