Raspberry Eurasia

Despite the fact that remontant raspberry varieties have been known for quite a long time and are widely grown not only by professionals, but also by ordinary gardeners and summer residents, their growth characteristics are still not correctly understood. The vast majority of experts agree that remontant raspberries can also be called annual. Therefore, it is much more correct to grow it, cutting all the shoots to zero in the fall, and getting one full-fledged crop in late summer or early autumn. But many remontant varieties do not have time to fully ripen in a relatively short and cool summer. In this regard, some gardeners in the northern regions, trying to get at least some kind of harvest from such varieties, leave remontant raspberry shoots to winter.

Raspberry Eurasia

Raspberry Eurasia, being a typical representative of remontant varieties, begins to ripen from the beginning of August and therefore can be used for planting even in regions with a short summer. Since by mid-September the entire crop from the bushes can be fully harvested. And this is not its only advantage. It seems that this raspberry variety is the very golden mean, which is sometimes so difficult to find in an effort to combine large-fruited berries, their good yield, and excellent taste. Description of the raspberry variety Eurasia with photos and reviews of gardeners, see later in the article.

Variety description

The raspberry variety Eurasia was obtained back in 1994 from seeds with the help of free pollination of remontant interspecific forms. Kazakov I.V., Kulagina V.L. took part in the selection. and Evdokimenko S.N. At that time, he was assigned the number 5-253-1. After numerous tests since 2005, it is already breeding as an established variety, and it has been given the name Eurasia. And in 2008, this variety was registered in the state register of Our Country. The Breeding and Technological Institute of Horticulture and Nursery, located in Moscow, acted as the patent holder.

Raspberry Eurasia

Eurasia belongs to the remontant varieties, the main difference of which from the traditional ones is the real opportunity to produce crops on annual shoots. Theoretically, it can produce crops on two-year-old shoots, like ordinary raspberries, if they are not cut before winter. But in this case, the load on the bush will be too large and many of the advantages of this method of growing will be lost.

Bushes of Eurasia are characterized by straight growth, they are of medium strength and usually do not exceed 1,2-1,4 meters in height. Raspberry Eurasia belongs to the standard varieties, it grows quite compactly, therefore it does not need a garter and the construction of trellises. This, in turn, greatly simplifies the care of raspberries.

Annual shoots by the end of the growing season acquire a dark purple hue. They are characterized by a strong wax coating and weak pubescence. Spikes of medium size are bent down. In the lower part of the shoots there are especially many of them, from above it becomes much less. Fruit side branches of raspberry Eurasia also have a good wax coating and slight pubescence.

The leaves are large, wrinkled, slightly twisted.

Flowers of medium size have a simple pubescence.

Attention! Due to their compact shape, size and abundant flowering and fruiting, Eurasia raspberry bushes can also be useful as a site decoration.

Raspberry Eurasia

The variety forms an average number of replacement shoots, about 5-6, a little root growth is also formed. This amount may be enough to propagate raspberries, at the same time there is no thickening, you can not spend a lot of effort on thinning raspberries.

Unlike many mid-late varieties or those that have an extended fruiting period, Eurasia raspberries ripen at a fairly early date and quite amicably. During August, you can manage to harvest almost the entire crop and not fall under the first autumn frosts, even when it is grown in relatively cold regions of Our Country.

The average yield of Eurasia raspberries is 2,2-2,6 kg per bush, or if converted into industrial units, then about 140 kg / ha. True, according to the originators, with suitable agricultural technology, you can get up to 5-6 kg of raspberries from one bush of the Eurasia variety. Berries ripen more than half the length of the shoots.

The variety Eurasia shows a fairly high resistance to diseases and pests. According to some reviews of gardeners, raspberries are susceptible to the broom virus. It looks like too many shoots are formed from one point at the same time.

Due to the powerful root system, the Eurasia raspberry variety is highly drought-resistant, but the heat resistance is medium. The latter property means precisely resistance to ambient temperature in conjunction with its humidity.

Characteristics of berries

Eurasia raspberry berries are characterized by the following characteristics:

  • The mass of berries is not very large – an average of about 3,5-4,5 grams. The largest can reach 6,5 grams.
  • The shape of the berries is conical with a beautiful dark crimson color without shine.
  • They have a good density and at the same time quite easily separated from the fruit bed. Even after ripening, the berries can hang on the bushes for about a week without losing their taste and commercial qualities.
  • The taste can be noted as sweet and sour, tasters rate it at 3,9 points. The aroma is almost not noticeable, as, indeed, in most remontant raspberry varieties.
  • The berries contain 7,1% sugar, 1,75% acid and 34,8 mg of vitamin C.
  • The fruits of Eurasia are well stored and easily transported.
  • They are distinguished by versatility in use – the berries are suitable both for eating directly from the bush, and for a variety of preservation.

Raspberry Eurasia

Peculiarities of growing

Raspberry Eurasia is well adapted for growing in almost any climatic conditions and is especially picky about the composition of the soil.

But only due to the peculiarities of the structure of the root system – in this variety it is closer to the core type and is able to reach deep layers of soil – deeper tillage is necessary before planting new bushes.

Advice! It is recommended to add about 5-6 kg of humus to each planting hole to form a particularly powerful root system.

In more northern regions, in addition, it is good to plant Eurasia raspberries on high insulated ridges. This will create additional warming in early spring and help speed up the ripening of berries.

Between the bushes during landing, a distance of 70 to 90 cm is maintained.

Full mowing of shoots in late autumn is strongly recommended by experts and, above all, by the authors of the variety for all remontant raspberries, since this method of cultivation allows you to get the following advantages:

  • The winter hardiness of raspberries increases dramatically, since there is no need to bend down and cover the shoots for the winter.
  • By itself, the problem with pests and diseases is removed – they simply have nowhere to stay and winter, which means that treatments can also be nullified. Thus, you reduce the work of caring for raspberries and at the same time get a more environmentally friendly product.
  • Berries ripen in large quantities precisely at a time when traditional raspberries are no longer found, so the demand for them is increasing.

Reviews of gardeners

Reviews of gardeners about Eurasia raspberries may vary depending on the purpose of its cultivation. For sale, this variety seems to be one of the best, but for itself and its family it has some disadvantages in taste sensations.

Lyubov, 53 years old, Bryansk region
I have been growing raspberry Eurasia in my area for the last, probably, five years. I’m not going to part with it yet, but I like it mainly for the decorativeness and unpretentiousness of the bushes themselves. She does not need any support, let alone a trellis. The bushes look very neat, even a little reminiscent of conifers. Shoots with purple bark, there are not so many thorns, especially since they are concentrated mainly in the lower part of the bush and do not interfere at all when picking berries. For the winter, I cut all the bushes directly at ground level. In the spring, fresh growth appears, I water and feed it as usual. Eurasia does not require any supernatural care – this is probably what it is good for. Quite a lot of berries ripen, and what I especially like is in the earliest possible time. In our region, for example, located far from the southernmost latitudes, the first berries ripen at the end of July, and by the end of September, the raspberries have time to give up the entire crop. In this case, the maturation is 100%. The size of the berry, of course, is not the largest, in the region of 3-4 grams. Most importantly, her taste could have been better, sweeter. And from the sunny side, some whitish coating appears on the berries and I don’t really like it. Maybe, of course, I’m doing something wrong, but in my conditions the variety behaves like this.
Victor, 39 years old, Saratov region
A few years ago, he laid a small plantation of remontant raspberries on his site. It is still too early to draw certain conclusions, but the most early-ripening of all my varieties is Eurasia so far. The taste is quite good, now the second half of September – fruiting is coming to an end. I like that she has a lot of berries and the bushes do not require any care at all.

Conclusion

Raspberry Eurasia

Raspberry Eurasia has many advantages, and although its taste qualities are in question, this characteristic is so subjective and individual that, perhaps, this particular variety can serve as a compromise between productivity and large-fruitedness on the one hand and decent taste qualities on the other.
