Just three weeks ago, everything indicated that the fourth wave was ending and the epidemic was calming down. Unfortunately, the extremely contagious variant of Omikron has also appeared in Poland, and with it a record number of new COVID-19 cases. The value of the R index also increased. Alarming data concern all voivodships.
- The R index in Poland has increased – it is now 1,45, which means that the epidemic is developing
- The worst situation is in the province. Silesian
- New COVID-19 cases are on the rise. The fifth wave is record-breaking in this respect, and its peak is expected in mid-February

R indicator up. Guilty Omikron
In early January, we reported that the R-rate, or the reproductive rate of the virus, was 0,83, lower than in December. This meant that fewer and fewer people became infected, and the epidemic is slowly dying out (more details HERE).
However, the situation changed quickly. The share of the Omikron variant in new infections grew day by day, which translated into a rapid increase in new cases. Let us recall that today there were over 57 thousand. infections – most since the start of the pandemic.
From the information we obtained from the Ministry of Health, it appears that currently, the R index for Poland is 1,45.
The reproductive rate of the virus tells you how many people are infected by one infected person.
- If the R is less than 1, the epidemic is dying out
- If the value is greater than 1, the epidemic continues. One infected person can infect more than one healthy person

In no region is the epidemic retreating, on the contrary – it can be expected that the coming weeks will see an increase in the number of new infections, and with it also deaths and hospitalizations.
The COVID-19 Real-Time PCR test can be performed at selected drive thru points of the Diagnostics network.
On Thursday, January 27, a record number of infections was detected – over 57. cases. According to scientists, the worst is yet to come. Experts from the University of Warsaw predict that there will be 130 infections daily, and over 2 million Poles will be in quarantine. The peak of the fifth wave is forecasted for mid-February.
Some experts believe that this wave will be intense, but short. This could be concluded from the experiences of other countries that have already faced Omikron. Unfortunately, the level of vaccination against COVID-19 in Poland is lower than, for example, in the United Kingdom, so it is difficult to predict whether the epidemic will unfold in our country in a similar way.
Prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Pyrć said in an interview with Medonet: – There is a great risk that health protection will suffer a lot and we will see a large number of deaths again. However, it is far too early to talk about when the fifth wave will end.
He also warned that a lot of Poles would get sick, which would be fatal.
– A lot of people will get sick, which will make them unable to function professionally. This, in turn, will create a huge threat to the operation of most industries, not only health, but also transport and defense – he said.
