Every woman dreams of looking great, having a slim and fit figure. The problem of being overweight is a real scourge of our time. Woman’s Day has figured out how to defeat common weight loss myths.
Why can’t you lose weight? Why is fasting harmful? Why are the pounds coming back? Is it possible to lose weight locally?
Woman’s Day posed these and other questions to Mekan Rakhimberdyevich Orazov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Practicing Surgeon-Gynecologist-Endocrinologist, Specialist of a network of clinics
Obesity is a disease characterized by excess fat deposition in the subcutaneous tissue or tissues of the body, often due to metabolic problems in the body. Some diseases of the female endocrine system lead to hormonal disorders, interfere with weight loss, and provoke its increase. Without treating these diseases, you should not even try to lose weight – it will be pointless.
My advice: visit a gynecologist-endocrinologist, get tested for hormones, check the level of cholesterol and lipids. If the doctor, after receiving the test results, diagnoses you with some kind of disease associated with disorders in the endocrine system, go through the course of treatment that will be prescribed for you. And only after that, when the hormonal background normalizes, you will solve all weight loss issues with the help of special diets and physical exercises recommended to you personally. This is how you will achieve success not only in treating the underlying disease, but also in gradually losing weight.
The most important myth is fasting. No doctor will advise you to starve in order to lose weight with obesity. Because, by starving, you get rid of a couple of kilograms, and then, when you start eating again, three times more.
The reason lies in the metabolism, which is further deteriorated by the stress of fasting. In people with hormonal disorders, the metabolism is already reduced, slowed down reactions occur – the experienced hunger further slows down all the processes that occur in the body, it seems to be trying to accumulate something in order to put aside a supply just in case, to deceive you. Therefore, after fasting, the weight returns very quickly.
Unfortunately, diets cannot achieve this. You can achieve a similar effect either by exercising in the gym or by liposuction.
With this problem, women can, first of all, cope with the possibilities of modern aesthetic and plastic surgery. But from myself I can add, if you are going to lose excess weight in large quantities, do it only on the advice of your doctor and resort to a little “secret” – buy yourself a special corrective underwear that will help you hide some flaws and emphasize all your dignity.
You can and should always monitor your diet: keep a food diary, eat the main amount of food in the morning, make your food fractional – 5-6 times a day. I usually advise patients to take at least 2 snacks between meals. At the same time, it is necessary to limit the use of an excessive amount of easily digestible carbohydrates in your diet (any bakery products, potatoes, carbonated drinks) and completely eliminate sugar. Any endocrinologist will tell you that sugar is a background food for weight gain. And, of course, you need to move more: I recommend walking for at least 30 minutes a day, swimming and 2-3 times a week anaerobic exercise.
Yes, recently there was just such a case: one patient came to my appointment with complaints of being overweight by more than 40 kg and menstrual irregularities. She passed the tests, on the basis of which I prescribed treatment for the patient: a diet, gave recommendations on fractional nutrition and weight loss, suggested medications to improve hormonal parameters. The patient agreed to everything, thanked her and left. After one and a half to two months, she again came to my appointment with the question: “Why can’t I lose weight further? I lost a couple of kilograms, but I just can’t do it anymore ”. I checked her analyzes and her hormonal levels remained unchanged. I immediately suspected that something was wrong and asked how she followed my recommendations. It turned out that she was taking the prescribed drugs, but at the same time decided to starve, deciding that this way she would lose weight faster. I had to explain to her that it was absolutely impossible to do this. As a result, following the recommendations, she really began to lose weight, the hormonal balance was restored and she lost 6 kg in 24 months! I believe this is a victory, first of all, over the myth that fasting can help you lose weight. You can only lose weight by strictly following the recommendations of your doctor, and not doing what you think will be better and faster.
You can ask your question to the doctor
