Questions not to ask an interior designer
If you do not want your designer to run away headlong despite the impressive amount of royalties, then exclude these few questions from the dialogue. And then you will see how much more enjoyable (and more productive!) Communication will become.
Many designers admit that they have had some really failed projects. And all because the customers so quickly managed to bring their questions to white heat that they wanted to run away from them without looking back. And no fee was able to force them to complete this project, although initially nothing foreshadowed trouble. In order for such situations to happen as rarely as possible, we have prepared a memo on how not to communicate with a designer.
I didn’t like any of the ten options. Can you draw something else?
There is nothing worse for a designer than saying “suggest me something else.” After all, each person has his own taste, and, accordingly, it is difficult to guess what he means by this “something.” Therefore, at the very beginning, at the stage of discussion, you need to clearly voice your wishes, and even better – send the designer examples of what you like. In this case, you will speed up the process of creating your own project and immediately exclude moments that you do not understand or do not like.
Can you give the builders your plan for now, and we will agree on the arrangement of furniture later?
Every professional knows that all the drawings, including the electrical plan, begin to be implemented by the builders only after the final agreement with the customer. Otherwise, at the exit, it may turn out that all the sockets and switches will be behind the sofa (or other furniture), and the lamp was generally not hung where you would like.
I like ethnic style, and my husband likes modern. Can you do something in between?
If two (or more) customers appear at the facility, then this will certainly lead to quarrels and misunderstandings. Professionals argue that someone alone should be responsible for the project, so you should not eliminate family squabbles with your husband in front of the designer, giving him the role of an arbitrator or a psychologist. It is necessary to agree in advance in what style you plan to decorate your apartment, and determine whose word will be decisive when communicating with a specialist.
We thought we needed this sofa. But can we stay on a tight budget?
Of course, it happens that in the process of work you find a more interesting version of the lamp / furniture / accessories, but the designer does not have to monitor all the stores to find the model you like for a lower budget. After all, before starting work, you probably discussed all the details and determined how much you are ready to spend on renovating your apartment. Therefore, if your fantasy tells you that this purple armchair will look amazing in this interior, then either discuss additional costs, or study the proposals of brands to find “the same, but with mother-of-pearl buttons.”
Are you sure it will be comfortable to use?
A designer is not a representative of a cleaning company or service department. He only creates an individual project for you, taking into account your tastes and rhythm of life. Of course, he can tell you that if you have pets, then in no case do a dark glossy floor. Of course, you can ignore his opinion and demand, for example, a subfloor in the kitchen, in which pieces of furniture will be picturesquely reflected. In addition, it is up to you to use different gadgets and household appliances, so ask the specialists in advance whether it will be convenient to handle certain items. Or they are good only as an exhibition model, but in everyday life it is better to choose something simpler.
My friends said that these colors are incompatible. And in general, relatives think that it will be too colorful. Maybe we can redo it?
The designer has already presented to you his vision of the project, based on your taste preferences. If you initially approved the sketches, and then thought that the opinion of a professional is not authoritative for you and it is better to listen to your relatives, then do not ask what the designer thinks about the advice of your mother or friend. In this case, it would be most reasonable to either trust a specialist or refuse his services and communicate with the builders on your own.
