Question to the expert: “I’m afraid to ask in class: can I go out?”

Children’s analyst Anna Skavitina talks about how to overcome fear of classmates and figure out why you don’t like going to school.

“… Everyone will understand why and will laugh. If I really need it, I say that I feel bad, and I completely go home.

Anna Skavitina, children’s analyst:

“Mitya, you have been at school for a whole year. Surely you have seen how many children solve this problem in a different way – they raise their hand, and the teacher allows them to leave. They are not laughed at! But you can’t do the same. It looks like you sometimes have a hard time at school, and your smart head came up with such a tricky way. It turns out that you kill two birds with one stone: you go to the toilet and you run away from lessons. It is better to deal with these hares separately. You need to go up to the teacher with your mother and tell how scared you are – and agree that if you raise your hand in some certain way, the teacher will immediately let you go. You know perfectly well that all people in the world go to the toilet – and the guys, and teachers, and parents. Therefore, the fact that you do not go there is much more strange than if you go there like everyone else. Another thing is why you don’t really like school: maybe it’s just boring or there are some problems with the guys. It would also be nice to talk to your mom about this. It seems to me that mom will understand you, and together you will figure out how to cope with all these difficulties. Mitya, everything will definitely work out!
