Pulneo – syrup or drops? Dosage, price, leaflet

Pulneo is an expectorant that can be obtained as a syrup or oral drops. The main indication for taking them is to reduce the swelling of the respiratory mucosa. What is worth knowing about Pulneo? Can the drops and syrup be used interchangeably? We check not only how much they cost, but also how to dose both Pulneo syrup and Pulneo tablets.

Pulneo – how does it work?

Both oral drops and Pulneo syrup contain the active ingredient fenspiride, which is primarily characterized by anti-inflammatory properties, reducing swelling of the respiratory mucosa, especially the bronchi. In addition, it has a relaxing effect. Fenspiride blocks H1 receptors, allowing the bronchi to contract.

Pulneo is available in the form of:

  1. Pulneo oral drops; 
  2. Pulneo syrup; 
  3. Pulneo syrup, cola flavor. 

Pulneo – the composition of oral drops

In the composition of Pulneo, apart from the active substance, i.e. fenspiride (Fenspiridi hydrochloridum), there are auxiliary substances:

  1. Sorbinic potassium (E 202); 
  2. Glycerol; 
  3. Sucrose; 
  4. Vanilla flavor AR 0345; 
  5. Citric acid;  
  6. Sucralose;  
  7. Sodium chloride; 
  8. Purified Water. 

Pulneo – the composition of the syrup

The composition of the syrup, apart from fenspiride, is composed of:

  1. Methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218); 
  2. Propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 216); 
  3. Sorbinic potassium (E 202); 
  4. Glycerol 99,5%; 
  5. Sodium saccharin; 
  6. Sucrose; 
  7. Bitter orange tincture; 
  8. Vanilla flavor AR 0345; 
  9. Citric acid anhydrous; 
  10. Purified Water. 

It’s worth knowing that the cola flavored Pulneo syrup contains the aroma of cola AR0615.

Pulneo – indications

The main indication for the use of Pulneo is symptomatic treatment in the case of cough and expectoration. Therefore, the plant preparation can be used in lung and bronchial diseases. However, Pulneo treatment cannot be treated as the only solution, especially if the symptoms of bronchitis or pneumonia worsen. You should also contact your doctor if your health does not improve within 4-5 days.

Pulneo – dosing of the syrup

Taking Pulneo syrup should be consulted with a doctor who will determine the daily dose of the substance. The leaflet attached to the medicine also contains information on treatment with the use of a liquid preparation. Pulneo syrup should be dosed 2-3 times a day before meals. Children over two years of age should take a maximum of 4 mg per kilogram of body weight, which in practice means:

  1. Children under 10 kg – 10-20 ml of syrup daily; 
  2. Children over 10 kg – 30-60 ml of syrup daily. 

Adults can take 45 to 90 ml of syrup daily.

Pulneo – dosage of oral drops

As with syrup, Pulneo oral drops should be taken before a meal. The drug can be given to children over 2 years of age. A maximum of 4 mg per kilogram of body weight is taken, that is:

  1. Children under 10 kg – 10-20 drops twice a day; 
  2. Children over 10 kg – 20-40 drops three times a day. 

Adults can take 30 to 60 drops three times a day.

Pulneo – contraindications

The main contraindication to the use of oral drops or Pulneo syrup is hypersensitivity to any of the active or auxiliary substances of the drug. In addition, the preparation should not be given to children under two years of age.

Pulneo – precautions

Due to the sucrose content of Pulneo, people who are intolerant to certain sugars should be careful when dosing it. Moreover, diabetics should take into account the fact that 5 ml of syrup contains 3 g of sucrose, 15 ml of syrup contains 9 g of sucrose, and 1 ml of solution (oral drops) contains 786 mg of sucrose.

In addition, methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoate can cause allergic reactions. In addition, some people may experience impaired motor skills, including operating machinery and driving, when taking Pulneo.

Pulneo – is an overdose possible?

Symptoms such as:

If an overdose of Pulneo is suspected, gastric lavage should be performed and cardiac function monitored.

Pulneo – interactions with other drugs

Although fenspiride is not expected to interact with other medications, it does have antihistamine properties. For this reason, care should be taken when combining its action with:

  1. Barbiturates (mainly drugs used in the treatment of epilepsy); 
  2. Other antihistamines; 
  3. Pain medications (mainly opioid analgesics); 
  4. Sedative drugs; 
  5. MAO inhibitors (mainly drugs used in the treatment of depression). 

In addition, Pulneo can not be combined with alcohol.

Pulneo and pregnancy, fertility and lactation

Taking Pulneo as well as other medications in pregnant and breastfeeding women should be consulted with a doctor. Due to the lack of information on the dosage of the syrup or Pulneo drops in pregnancy, women should not take it.

This also applies to breastfeeding mothers, as the possibility of fenspiride passing into the blood and milk has not been thoroughly investigated. In addition, Pulneo should not be taken by women of childbearing age if they do not use contraception, as the drug may affect fertility.

Pulneo – side effects

Both in the case of dosing the syrup and drops, side effects may occur, including:

  1. Immune system disorders (rash, hives, permanent skin discoloration, Quincki’s edema); 
  2. Nervous system disorders (drowsiness, headache); 
  3. Heart rhythm disturbances – increased heart rate; 
  4. Gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain, taste disturbance); 
  5. Respiratory disorders, including the thoracic and mediastinal disorders, the occurrence of dyspnoea; 
  6. Increase in blood pressure. 

Pulneo – how to store?

Pulneo should be kept out of the reach of children, in a tightly closed container. The plant preparation cannot be frozen or kept in the refrigerator. It is best to keep Pulneo in its original packaging, which is also protected from light.

Pulneo – price and availability

Pulneo is available over the counter. The drug can be purchased directly at the pharmacy or through the website. Pay attention to the expiry date so that you do not take an expired preparation. Pulneo syrup costs about PLN 15, the cost of Pulneo syrup with cola flavor is similar. On the other hand, the price of oral drops is about PLN 12.
