Pugs are small dogs native to China. One of their advantages is ease of maintenance. Dog handlers advise inexperienced owners to start such a breed of dogs. However, the content still has its own nuances. What are the rules for caring for a pug?
When you bring your puppy home, you will immediately need to set a feeding schedule. Up to 4 months, the pug needs to be fed 4 times a day, from 4 to 7 months – 3 times a day. But after 7 months, the dog should be fed two times a day.
Choose special foods for your baby by age. Gradually start introducing cereals, meat, fish, fruits and vegetables into his diet. Make sure your puppy always has a bowl of clean water. It should be changed at least once a day.
Expect your puppy to constantly beg for food, even if he is full. If this is the case, offer him healthy snacks, such as a slice of apple, carrot, or peeled walnuts.
Also train your little pug for long walks outside. However, do not forget about the temperature regime. This breed does not tolerate heat and frost, so in such weather, reduce walks to a minimum.
Be sure to provide your puppy with a comfortable sleeping place. It should be warm and soft. It is advisable to place it in a secluded place.
The following rules apply to the nutrition of an adult pug:
- Don’t feed your dog from your table. What you eat can harm your pet’s body.
- Smoked, sweet, starchy foods, spices and semi-finished products are poison for a pug of any age.
- Most of the animal’s diet should consist of solid foods. It is better absorbed by this breed of dog.
- The pet’s diet should be varied, it should include vitamins and minerals.
- Raw meat and vegetables are preferred over boiled ones.
Some owners mistakenly think that pugs should be given whole milk and fatty meats. In fact, these foods are poorly absorbed by the dog’s stomach and are best eliminated from the menu entirely.
The owner needs to monitor the pet’s hygiene. The short coat should be brushed once a week. Also, you need to clean the wrinkles on the face weekly. Use a cotton pad to wipe them down with any gentle, alcohol-free lotion. But you can bathe your pet every 2-3 months.
As you can see, caring for a pug is easy. This dog can live even in a small apartment, it performs guard functions, but due to its size, it will not work as a guard. In addition, pugs get along well with children.
