Each of us has repeatedly faced the need to perform in front of a large number of people. This article covers the basics of public speaking. Useful information on how to make communication with the audience as comfortable and successful as possible.
Public speaking skills
“The secret to public speaking success is talking to people, not speaking to them!” Radislav Gandapas
For a successful speech, you need to carefully prepare when the text is written. It is better to choose the main theses from it and write them down separately – this is a “skeleton”. After defining the “skeleton”, it needs to be filled, prepared improvisation will come in handy. For example, jokes, events from life, which at the right time will help dilute the text.
For the final consolidation, it is advisable to make sketches, graphs, then it will be possible to visualize it during the report.
The finished speech should have a logical connection: the beginning, the main part and the end. The first takes 10-15% of the time, the conclusion is 20-25%, the rest is the middle.
Moreover, the middle expresses the main idea with arguments, the beginning is a decoding of what the conversation will go on next, the end is the conclusions following from the main part.
It is important to interest the audience immediately by telling a joke, an interesting story related to the topic of the speech. To maintain attention, the necessary intonation, short phrases, pauses between parts of sentences are used. Do not drag out the speech, then the attention is scattered, and it will be difficult to catch it back. 15-20 minutes is the optimal time.
The target audience
It is advisable to know the audience and the place of your performance. Knowing people will allow you to speak the same language with them. Audience research can help you focus on specific places to maintain eye contact.
Connect with the audience, don’t be afraid to ask questions and answer questions from the audience. It will be more interesting for everyone and your lecture will be better remembered. (The art of conversation). Eye contact is very important. It allows people to understand that the speaker is talking to them, and not to the ceiling or the floor.
Create an atmosphere
It is important to create the right atmosphere in which both the spectator and the speaker will feel comfortable; for this, a certain attribute is suitable, a personal thing associated with a pleasant place and homeliness. For example, the speaker puts water in front of him in a cup, and not in a stern glass.
Apparel
Clothing should be chosen for the place of performance and for the audience. Clothing should not distract from the speaker himself. In any case, it should be comfortable in it. Controlling your appearance and words is a must – no imbalance.
The only exception is the informal setting. It doesn’t matter what to perform at the party.
Gestures
Pay attention to gestures. Strong hand gestures, swaying, walking around the stage will be perceived as self-doubt. This will not allow you to dominate the public. It would be best to take a place in the center or a little to the side of the stage, stand confidently, light gestures, a lively face, but without harsh facial expressions.
The final
Don’t end your speech with the words, “That’s all I wanted to say.” Briefly summarize your presentation. After the performance, you need to thank the audience, saying about its importance. This will be well received and will leave a pleasant feeling for the speaker.
