You can lock cells if you want to protect them from editing. In this example, we will block the cell A2.
Before you begin, remember that all cells are disabled by default. However, blocking a cell is meaningless until the sheet on which it is located is protected. That is, the cells on the sheet will be blocked only when the sheet is protected. Therefore, if you want to lock just one cell, you first need to unlock all the cells on the sheet, then lock only the desired cell, and then protect the sheet.
- Select all cells.
- Right click on the sheet and click Format Cells (cell format).
- On the Advanced tab Protection (Protection), uncheck the box next to Locked (Protected cell) and press OK.
- Right click on a cell A2 and then Format Cells (cell format).
- On the Advanced tab Protection (Protection) check the box next to Locked (Protected cell) and press OK.
Note: If you check the box next to Hidden (Hide formulas), other users will not be able to see the formula in the formula bar when the cell is selected A2.
- Protect sheet.
Cell A2 blocked. You can still edit other cells on this sheet. To edit a cell A2, you will have to unprotect the sheet.
