Selected drugs for the prostate gland are a way to effectively fight prostate hyperplasia. This problem affects many men of mature age. The first signs should not be ignored as the bothersome symptoms may worsen. The disease affects the deterioration of sexual performance, as well as possible problems with the urinary system. Therefore, it is worth asking a professional doctor’s opinion.
Prostate drugs – the main symptoms and methods of treatment
When choosing the optimal drugs for the prostate, it is necessary to examine the current state of prostatic hyperplasia and all the consequences associated with it. The urologist can then implement the appropriate treatment process that will be effective and completely safe for the patient. If a man notices specific changes, he should see a specialist as soon as possible. The first symptoms of the disease may be:
- difficulty starting or stopping urination
- frequent urination during the night
- a sudden feeling of pressure on the bladder
- urine flowing in a weak stream or in small drops.
Such situations should not be underestimated, as similar symptoms apply to cancer of the prostate and bladder. In pharmacotherapy, doctors most often prescribe:
- preparations from the group of alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonists,
- hormonal drugs,
- substances of plant origin.
Prostate drugs – composition and dosage
When taking specific drugs for the prostate, you need to remember about their systematic use and the correct dosage. You can get any instructions from your doctor or pharmacist, so if in doubt, ask for details. The most commonly used drugs are drugs that bring optimal results and safety for the patient. They contain, inter alia, the following active substances:
- tamsulosin,
- doxazosin,
- now sina,
- alfuzosin,
- silodosin.
It is a large group of so-called alpha blockers, which relax the smooth muscles of the prostate stroma. However, there is also a second type of preparations that act by inhibiting the activity of the 5-alpha-eductase enzyme. They contain two basic chemicals, finasteride and dutasteride. Unfortunately, infertility is possible as a side effect.
Over-the-counter prostate medications and dietary supplements
If any changes are at an early stage, it is also worth supporting yourself with over-the-counter preparations that can be obtained at any pharmacy. The choice is really wide, and individual medications are based on natural ingredients. For this reason, pharmacists also recommend some dietary supplements that reduce annoying ailments. Such drugs and food products include, for example:
- small-flowered willowherb,
- saw palmetto extract,
- nettle extract,
- pumpkin seed oil,
- lycopene,
- saw palmetto fruit extract,
- some vitamins and minerals.
Of course, in the event of more serious problems, you should seek help from a urologist. Patients must also remember that usually such measures will not cure the problem, and their task is to provide additional support in recovery. Non-prescription prostate medications are therefore a complement to any possible therapy.

Prostate medications and alcohol consumption
As the problem affects men, many of them must change their lifestyle accordingly so that it does not affect the effectiveness of prostate medications. Therefore, their potential interactions with alcohol should be verified, which is a fairly common question asked by a doctor. Basically, you should avoid combining any medications with the consumption of spirits. They have a particularly negative effect on men struggling with the problem of prostatic hyperplasia. First, alcohol can affect acute urinary retention. Second, when free flow is blocked, a catheter must most often be inserted. This is a considerable discomfort for the patient, who must then take care of intimate hygiene very carefully. In this case, it is also recommended to refrain from drinking beer.
