Prostate cancer associated with a higher risk of one of the most dangerous cancers – colorectal cancer

Men diagnosed with prostate cancer are at a higher risk of developing one of the most deadly cancers: colon cancer, according to a study by researchers at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. The researchers reported the discovery of the magazine “Cancer”.

Canadian scientists have come to such conclusions after examining over 14. men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1987 and 2009. It was the first cancer disease in their lives. For comparison, five men (over 69 in total) of similar age were selected for each of them, but with no history of malignant neoplasm. All health status was followed until colorectal or other malignant cancer was found, died, left the country, or the end of 2009.

It found that men diagnosed with prostate cancer had 14 percent. higher risk of developing colorectal cancer in the future, especially rectal cancer (the last section of the large intestine) – the risk is higher by 36% In men with prostate cancer undergoing radiotherapy, the risk of developing rectal cancer increased by over 100%, i.e. more than twice as compared to patients not undergoing this method of treatment.

Commenting on the results, the scientists emphasize that patients who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer should be tested for colorectal cancer in a short time. This is especially true for those patients who are scheduled to undergo radiotherapy.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most insidious cancers – it can take up to 10 years to develop without obvious symptoms. The most important test in the prevention of this disease is colonoscopy (examination of the entire large intestine). Anyone over 50 should submit to it.
