The leaflet of Propranolol tells you where to use it. The indications are such cases as, for example:

  1. treatment of arterial hypertension,
  2. treatment of angina,
  3. primary and secondary prevention of myocardial infarction in people with coronary artery disease,
  4. control of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias,
  5. migraine prevention,
  6. treatment of essential tremor,
  7. reducing situational and generalized anxiety, including somatic anxiety,
  8. treatment supporting hyperthyroidism and thyroid crisis,
  9. treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy,

There is information in the leaflet of Propranolol about situations in which this preparation cannot be used. Contraindications include:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the drug,
  2. bronchial asthma,
  3. arterial hypotension,
  4. cardiogenic shock,
  5. bradycardia,
  6. metabolic acidosis,
  7. severe peripheral circulatory disorders,
  8. sick sinus syndrome,
  9. untreated phaeochromocytoma.

The Propranolol leaflet indicates that special care should be taken when using the preparation. Certain medical conditions and circumstances may make the agent unusable, or dosage adjustments should be made. In addition, care must be taken when taking the drug in patients with controlled heart failure. Such patients should remain under the supervision of a physician.

Beta-blockers cannot be used simultaneously with calcium antagonists, such as: diltiazem and verapamil. There is a likelihood of cardiac conduction disturbances, severe hypotension, and worsening of heart failure.

In addition, people with diabetes should exercise extreme caution when using Propranolol. It can sometimes mask the symptoms of a hypoglycaemia.

Dosage

The leaflet also contains dosing information. Your doctor will determine the appropriate doses and frequency of administration individually, depending on your condition and response to treatment. Under no circumstances should you exceed the recommended doses, as this will not increase the effectiveness of Propranolol, and may only harm the patient’s health.

Propranolol – neurosis

Although the main use of Propranolol is arterial hypertension and reducing the frequency of the heart rhythm and its contractions, this preparation is also effective in eliminating some of the symptoms of neurosis and anxiety attacks.
