Physalis is the largest perennial plant in the nightshade family. Its height is 0,5-1 meters. The most common plant species are vegetable, berry and ornamental. Vegetable physalis is considered edible.

Composition and useful properties of vegetable physalis

Physalis vegetable is a source of carbohydrates, glucose and fructose. It contains many active substances: tannin, polyphenols, flavonoids, fizalin, saponins, cryptoxanin, citric acid. It contains vitamins A, group B (B1, B2, B6, B12), organic acids. Lycopene, contained in physicalysis, gives the fruit a bright color. This substance has strong antioxidant properties; in medicine, it is used to prevent cancer.

The presence of pectin allows the use of physalis in dietary nutrition. This substance removes toxins, cholesterol, heavy metals from the body. Due to its composition, physalis is used in folk medicine as an anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, analgesic, diuretic and choleretic agent.

The use of vegetable physalis in medicine

It is believed that the vegetable physalis is not used in official medicine, but its pharmacological properties have been studied. It was experimentally found that the fruits have a diuretic effect, and the oil infusion heals tissues. Doctors recommend including ripe fruits in medical nutrition for diabetes, hypertension, chronic cholecystitis, hypoacid gastritis, stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers. Large fruits should be consumed in 12-4 pieces, and small ones – in 8-10 pieces, ten to fifteen minutes before meals. If the acidity of the stomach is increased, this dose should be halved, gradually increasing it.

The fruits of the plant can be used for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, with diarrhea, hypertension, and also as a general tonic. Physalis has a healing effect on the body of women: it helps to fight inflammatory processes in the reproductive organs, cystitis, urolithiasis, pyelonephritis.

Physalis is widely used in foreign folk medicine. For example, in Bulgaria, physalis decoction is drunk for diseases of the stomach and intestines, jaundice, hemorrhages, for problems with urination, hemorrhoids. In Central Asia, with the help of vegetable physalis, they treat constipation in the elderly, as well as anemia and hypertension. In these cases, 3-5 fresh fruits are consumed 10 times a day before meals. In Tajikistan, physalis juice is used to make a remedy for the treatment of stomatitis and tonsillitis in children: the fruits are crushed, this gruel and fresh juice are poured with milk and boiled over low heat.

Recipe for decoction and ointment from vegetable physalis

In folk medicine, fresh fruits, physalis juice, infusion and decoction of dried fruits are used for diseases of the respiratory tract, diseases of the stomach and liver, kidney and bladder stones, articular rheumatism, dropsy and gout.

To prepare the broth you will need: – 20 grams of dried physalis fruits; – 0,5 liters of water.

Pour the fruits with hot water, keep on low heat for 10-15 minutes. Leave the broth to infuse until it cools. This remedy can be used for coughs, as a hemostatic and pain reliever for heavy periods, as well as for gout, inflammatory diseases, articular rheumatism. It should be taken one fourth of a glass 4-5 times a day.

The aerial part of vegetable physalis and fruit sheaths contain alkaloids that are toxic. You cannot use them.

A decoction of vegetable physalis prepared according to this recipe is also used as an external agent (compresses) for dermatitis and diathesis. For a toothache, rinse your mouth with a hot broth.

From the dried fruits of physalis, you can prepare an ointment that will be effective in inflammatory processes of the skin, as well as in pain of a rheumatic nature.

To prepare the ointment you will need: – 10 dried physalis fruits, – 40 milliliters of olive oil.

Chop the dried fruits, cover them with olive oil, leave to infuse for 20 days, and then strain.

The use of vegetable physalis in cooking

Fresh physalis fruits taste good. They can be marinated, salted, dried and dried, made jam and preserves. Fresh physalis is added to various soups, borscht, sauces and salads. Caviar is made from baked fruits, fillings for pies are prepared. Physalis juice can be used as a seasoning for meat and fish dishes.

Vegetable physalis should be stored in a cool dry place by placing the berries in trellis or boxes with ventilation holes. Mature physalis is stored at a temperature of 12-14 ° C for one to two months. Unripe fruits last longer. Periodically, it is necessary to sort out the berries, throwing out the spoiled ones.
