In this publication, we will consider the definition and basic properties of a rectangular trapezoid.
Recall that the trapezoid is called rectangular, if the angles at one of its lateral sides are right, i.e. are equal to 90°.
Property 1
Two corners of a rectangular trapezoid are necessarily right, belong to the same lateral side, and the vertices of these corners are adjacent.
For the picture above:
- ∠BAD = ∠ABC = α = 90°
- ∠BAD и ∠ABC belong to the side AB
- Tops A и B – adjacent.
Property 2
One of the sides of a rectangular trapezoid is perpendicular to its bases.
In the picture above: AB ⊥ AD и AB ⊥ BC.
Property 3
Height of a rectangular trapezoid (H) coincides with the smaller side (FROM)perpendicular to the bases.
Property 4
Each of the diagonals of a rectangular trapezoid divides it into two triangles, one of which is also rectangular.
- Diagonal AC divides a trapezoid into triangles ABC и ACD, And ΔABC is rectangular with a right angle at the apex B.
- Diagonal BD divides the trapezoid into ΔABD (rectangular) and ΔBCD.
Note: the rest of the properties that apply to all types of trapezoids are given in our publication -.
