Proper care of tomatoes in the open field: care for seedlings
Outdoor tomato care follows proper planting, autumn soil preparation and proper seedling cultivation. It is not recommended to grow tomatoes after potatoes and eggplants. Organic fertilizers are applied under the previous culture: cucumbers, zucchini, greens.
Outdoor care for tomato seedlings
Tomatoes love bright sun and warmth. You need to choose the southern sections. The soil must be loose. In the spring, you need to dig it up with the addition of mineral fertilizers at the rate of 35 g per 1 sq. m. It is not necessary to add a lot of organic fertilizers for tomatoes. With an overabundance of organic matter, tomatoes give good greens, but not fruits.
Plant tomatoes no closer than 50 cm apart. Place a peg near each bush to tie tomatoes to it. There should be no other nightshades in the culture environment. Potatoes can infect tomatoes with late blight and brown rot. Caring for tomatoes is:
- in pasynkovanii;
- in watering;
- in top dressing.
The pickling of tomatoes depends on the variety. It is necessary to prevent the growth of green mass to the detriment of fruit set. The general recommendation is to form tomatoes into one stem, plucking out the side shoots. Don’t let them grow too big. Once they reach 2-4 cm, remove them. It is advisable to do this in the morning.
Water the plants about once a week. One plant uses 10 liters of water. Water gently to the root. If water gets on the leaves, they will be burned. The drops on the leaves are like a magnifying glass. The rays of the sun are refracted in them and burn the leaf. If there is not enough water, tomatoes lose flowers and ovaries.
The first feeding of tomatoes is carried out 2-3 weeks after planting. This is necessary if fertilizers were not applied to the soil in the spring. The soil is enriched with nitrogen and phosphorus. The second top dressing is nitrophoska. It should be applied during fruit setting. During the season, you need to loosen the soil 3 times. It is necessary to spud on the 12th day of planting.
Proper care of outdoor tomatoes
There are a huge number of varieties and hybrids of tomatoes. New ones are brought out annually. In order not to get confused in them, it is worth relying on the classification. All varieties of tomatoes are subdivided into:
- determinant;
- semi-determinant;
- indeterminate.
The first are short, the second are tall, up to 160 cm, the third are vines without limiting the point of growth. Indeterminate ones in the middle lane are not planted in open ground: they simply do not have time to ripen. The first option is best suited for an open landing. Low-growing tomatoes have varieties that do not need pinching. This can make life much easier for a novice gardener.
For the successful cultivation of tomatoes in the open field, it is necessary to study the needs of this plant. If you are a beginner, choose the most unpretentious and disease-resistant varieties and hybrids. Give preference to undersized varieties that do not require pinching.
