Propagation of stonecrop flower by cuttings
Stonecrop flower is unpretentious. It is photophilous, undemanding to the composition of the soil and is resistant to drought. Despite his unassuming, he looks attractive. The leaves retain their beautiful appearance for a long time, and some species of this plant enliven the site even in winter.
Stonecrop breeding methods
Sedum can be planted where other garden flowers cannot grow. They perfectly mask any stone surfaces. You just need to know how to reproduce them correctly in a short time.
There are several ways to breed:
- seeds;
- division of the bush;
- cuttings.
Seed propagation is a rather laborious and lengthy process. Seeds are sown in early spring in small boxes. They can be dug into the ground and placed in a greenhouse. The seedlings are very small. When the first leaves appear on them, they need to dive. With this method of reproduction, plants will bloom only in the 2nd or 3rd year. Seed propagation is usually used to develop new varieties.
The easiest way is to divide the four-year-old bushes into several parts in the fall or spring. You need to dig out a bush and carefully divide the rhizome so that each part has roots and buds. It is advisable to treat the wounds with a fungicide, and dry the pieces of rhizomes a little before planting.
Stonecrop propagation by cuttings
Cutting is the easiest way to reproduce. Some species form aerial roots, therefore, at the slightest contact with the soil, they quickly take root. This often happens when transplanting or dividing a bush. The cuttings should not be planted in the holes, but simply sprinkled with a thin layer of earth and sand in the prepared area. In hot weather, seedlings need to be shaded.
Best to land on foggy and cloudy days
To get a large number of bushes, you can use winter cuttings. Even before frost, you need to cut off powerful and strong shoots together with inflorescences and spread them out in a warm, dry room. After the leaves fall off, small green shoots with aerial roots will appear in their place. When the shoots reach a length of 5 cm, they must be broken out and planted in boxes. In May, stonecrops multiplied in this way can be planted in open ground.
Young stonecrop seedlings grow rapidly or form compact bushes, depending on the species and variety, therefore, with their help, you can quickly disguise unsightly corners of the garden.
