Hay fever allergy is very common. Both adults and children experience such ailments. Appropriate medications should be used to help fight allergic rhinitis. One of them is Pronasal – a preparation available in the form of a nasal spray. What properties does this drug have? What opinions does he have? Here is some information.
Pronasal – characteristics
Pronasal is an aerosol drug that you can buy in pharmacies with a prescription. The drug is intended for use during allergies. You can get it in packages of various sizes, but each package contains the same dose of the active ingredient, ie 50 µg. Pronasal can be purchased from:
- bottles of 60 doses;
- bottles of 140 doses;
- a pack containing 2 bottles of 140 doses;
- pack containing 3 bottles of 140 doses.
Pronasal to glikokortykosteroid. The active substance of the Pronasal aerosol is mometasone furoate. This substance has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. The aerosol is administered intranasally, where it soothes the troublesome symptoms of rhinitis. The drug reduces the amount of secretions, unblocks the nose, reduces sneezing and nasal itching.
The operation of Pronasal it is possible by inhibiting the release of mediators of an allergic reaction. However, it is worth remembering that the aerosol does not affect the results of allergy tests, as it does not contain histamine. Additionally, the drug can be applied topically, which ensures greater effectiveness.

Pronasal – composition
In the composition of 1 dose of Pronasal aerosol we find 50 mg of mometasone furoate, which corresponds to 52 mg of mometasone furoate monohydrate, as well as the Avicel RC-591 mixture.
It consists of microcrystalline cellulose with sodium carmellose, glycerol, sodium citrate dihydrate, citric acid monohydrate, polysorbate 80, non-alkonium chloride solution and water for injections.
Pronasal – properties
The properties of Pronasal are based on the action of mometasone furoate – a substance contained in the preparation. The substance applied intranasally has a soothing effect on the symptoms of rhinitis, such as irritation and swelling, sneezing, as well as itching and nasal congestion. It also works to reduce nasal discharge.
Pronasal – indications
The preparation contains mometasone furoate, which belongs to the group of glucocorticosteroids. It works to reduce inflammation of the nasal mucosa.
The preparation is recommended for:
- treating the symptoms of hay fever, called seasonal allergic rhinitis in children over 6 and adults,
- treatment of year-round allergic rhinitis in adults and children over 6 years of age,
- treatment of nasal polyps in adults.

Pronasal – dosage
The preparation is used intranasally in accordance with medical recommendations. The nasal spray should not be used in high doses, for a long time or more often than recommended by your doctor.
The recommended doses of Pronasal spray depend on the patient’s age and indications for use:
- seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis – adults and children over 12 years of age should use 2 doses of the drug in each nostril in one dose. When symptoms start to improve, the dose may be reduced to one application once a day. However, if symptoms persist, consult your doctor. He will decide the dose will be increased to 4 sprays into each nostril once a day. This is the maximum dose and once symptoms are under control, return to the standard dose. For children between 6 and 11 years of age, use 1 application in each nostril a day. Special care should be taken in these young patients as long term intranasal corticosteroids may slow the growth of the child. If the doctor notices such a side effect, it is necessary to reduce the dose. If Pronasal is used to relieve allergic symptoms, the doctor sometimes introduces an aerosol before the start of dusting;
- polypy nose – in adults, Pronasal is also used to treat nasal polyps. Treatment is usually started with 2 doses in each nostril once a day. Treatment effects are assessed after 5-6 weeks. If there is no improvement, the doctor may increase the dose to 2 sprays in each nostril twice a day. When improvement is achieved, the dose should be reduced to the lowest effective dose. In a situation where, despite the increase in the dose, the doctor does not notice any improvement after 2-5 weeks, he may decide to change the drug.
Pronasal usually takes effect approx. 12 hours after the first dose, and the full effect can be seen after 2 days of use. When using the drug, regularity and compliance with the doctor’s instructions are very important for its effectiveness.
If a patient misses a dose, take it as soon as possible and take the next doses as usual. However, do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten one.
At the same time, if, despite regular use, it is not possible to alleviate the symptoms or the symptoms worsen, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
Pronasal – overdose
In the event of an overdose, see a doctor, as the use of high doses of glucocorticosteroids or taking them for a long time may have a detrimental effect on the endocrine system and may inhibit their growth and normal development in children.

Pronasal – side effects
Pronasal may cause side effects, but it should be remembered that they do not occur in every patient. In addition, the most common benefits of using the Pronasal spray outweigh any possible risks.
It should also be remembered that most people do not notice any side effects associated with the use of the drug.
Glucocorticoids (including mometasone furoate present in the drug) used for long periods or in high doses may, in rare cases, adversely affect the patient’s hormones. In children, however, they can affect their development and growth.
Possible side effects of Pronasal are, among others:
- Headache,
- sneezing, and nasal irritation and burning sensation
- epistaxis,
- pain in the nose or throat,
- very rare: changes in taste and smell.
Some side effects require immediate medical consultation. These are:
- very rare immediate allergic reactions, which in 1 in 10 cases are very severe. Symptoms include wheezing;
- glaucoma and cataracts – they occur in 1 in 10 people using nasal corticosteroids.
In addition, it should be remembered that taking nasal corticosteroids in high doses for a long time may have systemic side effects as the drug is absorbed into the body.
In the case of children and adolescents, it is suspected that the side effects of Pronasal are the same. However, it should be borne in mind that in children, high doses of aerosol over a long period of time may slow a child’s growth. Therefore, it is recommended that the height of children and adolescents is regularly monitored.
Pronasal – contraindications
Pronasal is not recommended when:
- are allergic to mometasone furoate or any component of the preparation,
- you have an untreated infection of the nasal mucosa
- the patient has had surgery in the nose area or has had a nose injury.

Pronasal – precautions
The leaflet also points to caution when using the Pronasal spray. Pronasal is not recommended for children under 6 years of age, and older children and adolescents should use the drug with great care and under the supervision of a doctor.
It should be remembered that long-term use of Pronasal may slow down the growth of a child.
Pronasal contains an irritating preservative, i.e. benzalkonium chloride solution. This substance can cause skin reactions, so in the case of an aerosol, swelling of the nasal mucosa. If the patient has a stuffy nose, it is worth changing the drug to one devoid of this substance.
In addition, Pronasal should not be used in cases of nasal septum perforation as corticosteroids slow wound healing. Caution should also be exercised in the case of:
- tuberculosis – also if you have had the disease in the past;
- ocular form of herpes;
- infections;
- cystic fibrosis;
- taking other corticosteroids by mouth or by injection.
In the case of people who are sick or have ever had tuberculosis, or who have untreated bacterial, fungal or viral infections, Pronasal can be used only when absolutely necessary. In addition, people at risk of developing immunosuppressive effects should also exercise caution. Therefore, you should consult your doctor if you come into contact with viruses such as measles or chicken pox.
Caution should also be exercised if you have previously taken oral or injection corticosteroids. These drugs work generally, so when you stop taking them, you may experience adrenal insufficiency, as well as withdrawal symptoms such as:
- tiredness;
- initial depression;
- pain in muscles and joints.
If withdrawal symptoms or symptoms of adrenal insufficiency develop, systemic therapy should be reintroduced and another treatment option selected. The use of nasal corticosteroids can also reveal pre-existing allergic diseases that have been masked by general preparations.
Therefore, it is recommended to control the condition of the nasal mucosa when using Pronasal for several months or longer. If a fungal infection of the nasal or pharyngeal mucosa occurs, PRONASAL should be discontinued and another treatment instituted.
Systemic side effects are much less common with nasal corticosteroids. In their case, side effects may appear in the case of long-term use of the preparation or the use of high doses. Then the following may appear:
- Cushing’s syndrome;
- the facial appearance characteristic of Cushing’s syndrome;
- glaucoma;
- cataract;
- growth retardation of children and adolescents;
- adrenal suppression.
Mental symptoms and behavioral changes are much less common:
- sleep disturbance;
- bow;
- depression;
- aggression – especially in children;
- excessive psychomotor activity.
Increased pressure in the eye has also been reported with the use of corticosteroids. There are no data on the safety and efficacy of the preparation in the treatment of nasal polyps resulting from cystic fibrosis, unilateral or completely blocking the nasal cavity. In particular, irregularly shaped unilateral polyps that bleed or are ulcerated should be monitored.

Pronasal – interactions with other drugs
Before starting to use Pronasal, the patient is required to inform the doctor about all the preparations used, including those without a prescription. So far, it has not been reported that Pronasal interacts with loratadine.
Pronasal – interaction with alcohol
There was no interaction of Pronasal aerosol with alcohol. However, it should be remembered that the simultaneous consumption of alcohol and the use of certain pharmacological agents may adversely affect their effectiveness.
Pronasal – pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pronasal is not recommended during pregnancytherefore the woman should inform her doctor about her condition. The use of the drug is possible only when the benefits of using the spray outweigh the possible risks for both the woman and the fetus. There is a risk that your baby may develop adrenal insufficiency after birth and should therefore be monitored.
So far, it is not known whether mometasone furoate passes into breast milk, however, due to the safety of the child, it is not recommended to use Pronasal during breastfeeding. Discontinue use of the drug or breastfeeding. There are no data on the effect of the drug on fertility.
Pronasal – opinions
Pronasal has, above all, positive opinions. People using Pronasal praise it for its effective action. The drug helps to quickly get rid of sneezing, itching and nasal congestion. Other positive statements indicate that the product is also intended for use in children.
