Prolonged sleep is bad for your health. Video
There is a lot of talk about the benefits of adequate sleep and the need to get enough sleep. Everyday life can be so stressful that sometimes you don’t want to wake up at all. But it turns out that not only lack of sleep, but excessively long sleep can be harmful to health. Why?
What should be the ratio of activity and rest
When daytime activity is not accompanied by adequate rest, it can be exhausting. But rest, not compensated by the proper expenditure of energy, plunges into a state of “hibernation”. In order for a person to feel well rested and at the same time efficient, a balance must be established between the processes of sleep and wakefulness. Both lack of sleep and too long sleep displace this balance.
When the balance is imbalanced, various problems arise, such as:
- fatigue
- irritability
- insomnia
- apathy
- laziness
- physical ailments
In some cases, prolonged sleep is useful and even necessary. For the most part, it depends on the physical and emotional state. So, with severe fatigue, fatigue, daily physical activity, chronic lack of sleep, the body’s resources are depleted, and recovery may require a long prolonged rest. With severe exhaustion, a person can sleep for a whole day or even more. Also, a long sleep is useful when a person is sick and weak: it will help him save energy and recover sooner.
The benefit of long sleep is to maximize recuperation when a person needs it.
Why excess sleep is harmful
With an excess of the sleep hormone, a person will also feel overwork, lethargy and even fatigue. Ultimately, such a dream contributes not to recovery, but to loss of strength. Prolonged “hibernation” disrupts the natural course of the biological clock, the body has to rebuild, which has a detrimental effect on self-awareness and perception of the world. In this regard, decreased activity, efficiency, desire for new things. In addition, it creates overstrain and an increased risk of depression.
Prolonged sleep often signals a person’s conscious or unconscious withdrawal from problems. Here the principle “I am sleeping – it means I do not see anything, I don’t feel and I don’t take part in anything” is at work. This can be called psychological protection. Thus, isolation is formed, old complexes are strengthened and new ones are formed, because a person does not work on problems, but leaves them. Thus, if a person sleeps for a long time, this is a reason to pay attention to his state of mind (as, indeed, with insomnia).
Excessive sleep can lead to headaches, increased blood pressure, blood congestion, edema, and more.
How long sleep is considered normal
The rate of sleep and wakefulness is individual for everyone. However, there is a conditional framework by which it is approximately possible to determine how physiological the human biorhythm is. So, systematic sleep longer than 10-15 hours is considered too long and harmful, and 7-8 hours is the minimum, which is not recommended to be reduced.
