Proktosedon – composition, action, indications for use

Proktosedon is a rectal ointment used to treat external and internal anal hemorrhoids. It relieves symptoms such as bleeding, inflammation, pain and itching.

What is the composition and action of Proktosedon ointment?

The active substances in Proctosedon ointment are hydrocortisone, cinchocaine, neomycin and esculin. In addition, Proktosedon contains excipients such as liquid paraffin, white petrolatum and anhydrous lanolin. The active substances in Proctosedon have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and blood vessel sealing properties. They alleviate the symptoms associated with rectal varicose veins (hemorrhoids) – both outside and inside the anus. Hydrocorizone is anti-inflammatory. Cinchocaine has an anesthetic (analgesic) effect, and neomycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It prevents infection of the anus by pathogenic microorganisms such as staphylococcus and other gram-negative bacteria. Aesculin reduces swelling and bleeding in the vessels inside and around the anus.
