Prokit – action

Itopride, the active substance of the drug procit, stimulates the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract by antagonizing the dopamine D2 receptors and inhibiting the action of acetylcholinesterase. Itopride stimulates the release of acetylcholine and inhibits its degradation.

Itopride also exerts antiemetic activity through D2 receptors located in the trigger zone of the chemoreceptor. This was demonstrated by the dose-dependent inhibition of vomiting in dogs induced by apomorphine. Itopride accelerates gastric emptying in humans.

The action of itopride is highly specific to the upper gastrointestinal tract. The use of itopride does not affect serum gastrin levels. Following oral administration, itopride is rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
