The British variant of COVID-19 is responsible to the greatest extent for the third coronavirus wave in Poland. It is much more dangerous than the basic one, but according to prof. Vysotsky, the Brazilian and South African variants are even more dangerous. The infectious disease specialist also noted that returning from African countries after Easter may result in the presence of these strains in Poland.
- Of the many variants of the coronavirus present around the world, three are considered alert – British, Brazilian and South African
- British is currently the dominant strain in Poland. The first South African case appeared in our country in February. The Brazilian has not yet been found, but according to experts, its detection in our country is only a matter of time
- Poles’ returns from foreign Easter trips may contribute to their presence
- – The Brazilian and South African variants are even more dangerous than the British. It would be a great tragedy to bring them, warns prof. Jacek Wysocki, member of the Medical Council at the prime minister

The UK variant of the coronavirus is currently responsible for around 80% of the new cases of COVID-19 in Poland. It is much more contagious than basic, and the suspicions about its higher mortality have also been confirmed. However, according to prof. Jacek Wysocki, two other “alarm” variants are even more dangerous – the South African and the Brazilian.
– The British variant caused us a lot of trouble, but we will have another lesson in a moment, because the British variant is dangerous, but the Brazilian and South African variants are even more dangerous – said Prof. Wysocki, member of the Medical Council at the premiere, on TVN24.
The first case of infection with the South African variant was found in Poland in February, the Brazilian variant has not yet been detected in Poland, but according to prof. Wysocki, Easter trips to exotic countries carry a high risk of bringing these strains to Poland.
– Easter is ahead of us, so the period of people traveling. I am observing the fashion for holidays in Africa with great concern. May we not be brought to Poland in the South African or Brazilian variant, because it will be an even greater tragedy – emphasized Wysocki. In his opinion, people returning from those areas should be strictly quarantined,

Similar concerns were recently expressed by prof. Andrzej Fal in an interview with Medonet.
– I read recently that at the moment it is impossible to buy a trip or a flight to another country during Easter, which clearly shows what our intentions are regarding the upcoming holidays. I am very afraid of this, because we say many countries started their third growth earlier than us, but if such crowded planes arrive from there, the virus will mess up somewhere in the Greek islands or in the middle of Africa. And then we can wake up with the unpleasant awareness of new variants, which we should avoid at all costs – said the head of the Department of Allergology, Lung Diseases and Internal Diseases at the hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration.
Why the South African and Brazilian variants are of greater concern to virologists was told in an interview with PAP by Dr. Piotr Rzymski, a medical biologist from the Medical University of Poznań.

As he explained, the South African and Brazilian variants carry, among others, E484K mutation, classified as the so-called Escape mutation, as it allows the virus to partially bypass the interaction of the neutralizing antibodies that attack its S protein, by which it infects human cells.
– The South African variant raises concerns, among others because it can to some extent counteract the effects of virus-neutralizing antibodies in both convalescents and vaccinated people. However, it was found that vaccinated people, in whom the potency of neutralizing antibodies decreased to a much lesser extent, perform better in this respect – noted Dr. Peter of Rome.
Rzymski, in an interview with PAP, emphasized that vaccines are the most effective way to protect against all variants, including “emergency” variants.
- New variants of the coronavirus – all vaccines are effective against them
– None of the alarm variants does not abolish the sense of vaccinations. On the contrary, it is currently the most effective tool for preventing severe disease, hospitalizations and deaths due to it. This is the current goal of fighting the pandemic. It is doubtful, however, that humanity will be able to completely eradicate the coronavirus. But if it is to stay with us, let it be a clinically insignificant pathogen – said Dr. Peter of Rome.
