Omikron in Poland. There may be a lot of hospitalization

– The fifth wave of COVID-19 is accelerating – unfortunately – as predicted, actually to the decimal point. We talked about increasing the number of cases in the second half of January, and that is exactly the case. Probably in the following days there will be more and more new cases of infections – said in an interview with PAP the chief doctor for COVID-19 at the Szczecin provincial hospital, Prof. Miłosz Parczewski.

He added that this has not yet translated into the number of hospitalizations, but, as he recalled, the higher number of hospitalizations and deaths is delayed by about two weeks compared to the increase in infections.

  1. Prof. Thrust: if a large percentage of Poles are ill, it may paralyze social life

There is a high risk that there will be more hospitalizations in a moment. Even if Omikron is a milder variant, the statistics of numbers will not be deceived – if there are a lot of infections (and it will probably be), a certain percentage of people will be at risk of a severe course of the disease, which may result in the occupation of covid beds and limitation in the functioning of the health service – pointed out Prof. Parczewski.

The risk of severe course increases with age

He cautioned not to underestimate the Omikron variant – especially for the elderly. He pointed out that some data on the mild course of the disease come from African countries where the population is younger.

– If an elderly person is not vaccinated, and we still have a significant percentage of such people over 60 in Poland, the risk that the infection will end up badly or badly is significant and increases with each year of life – noted the doctor.

He also reminded that the reported number of new infections also depends on access to diagnostics, which is much wider, and that coronavirus infection is diagnosed faster than at the beginning of the pandemic.

“The sheer number of cases does not mean that something is wrong – in the second wave, we did not diagnose three out of four infected patients.” The more people we catch, the greater the number of cases will be given, and this does not mean that the situation is dramatic – Prof. Parczewski.

He noted that the speed of diagnosis also results in faster isolation of the infected person, thanks to which the virus will not be transmitted further.
