COVID-19 in Poland. Third dose possible earlier. What is known?

Prof. Marczyńska, the conversation with the prime minister on Sunday evening concerned, inter alia, inefficiency of the health service. Experts talked about the need to change subsequent wards into covid ones, no places for pulmonology or neurology.

«In the weeks to come, the state’s policy in the fight against the epidemic is to be such as to strengthen even more pro-vaccination measures, enforce the DDM principle and impose penalties, e.g. for not wearing masks where required. More fines are to be issued for violating these regulations, and the enforcement of compliance with these rules is to be strengthened »- indicated prof. Marczyńska.

  1. The third dose works in Israel. Europe should follow an example?

An announcement is to be released next week that will most likely allow the third dose of the vaccine to be administered earlier than six months after the primary immunization. «Most likely it will be possible to shorten this period to five months. This change is expected at any moment »- she said.

“In the coming weeks, no change in the state’s policy regarding the current wave of COVID-19 cases should be expected” – told PAP Prof. Marczyńska.

  1. New data on the effectiveness of the third dose

Experts from the Medical Council expressed their mutual hope that MPs sitting in the Sejm – regardless of political groups – will support the provisions of the law allowing employers to verify whether an employee is vaccinated against COVID-19.

“We hope that common sense will prevail in this matter,” added a member of the Medical Council.

When is the third dose administered – how is it in other countries?

Studies have shown that overall the immunity offered by the first two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine begins to decline after around six months. Hence the recommendations to use the next dose after this time. Such a recommendation was issued by the US government agency CDC, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), as is the case in Israel – the first country to start administering another dose of the vaccine.

  1. Everything you need to know about the third dose [GUIDE]

What is important is that, at national level, public health authorities can make official recommendations on the use of booster doses, taking into account not only the efficacy and safety data of the booster but also the local epidemic situation. We all know that in Poland the fourth wave is still climbing, not only is the number of infections and deaths growing – more and more people require hospitalization, more and more patients require connection to a ventilator. Meanwhile, it is known that after the third dose of the vaccine, the risk of hospitalization related to COVID-19 infection is 93%. lower compared with those who had only received two doses five months earlier. The risk of severe infection and death is also reduced.

A country that has already decided to cut the waiting time for a third dose from six months to five months for all is Singapore. The recipe will come into force on November 24. Previously, it was recommended that booster doses be given six months after the second dose in people aged 30 to 59 years and five months after the second dose in people 60 years of age and older (it has been shown that the elderly have lost antibodies earlier). Thanks to this standardization, there is a chance that half of the country’s population will receive the third dose by the end of the year.
