The Brazilian variant of the coronavirus, considered one of the three most dangerous, has already reached Poland. The first cases were discovered in Silesia. – The Brazilian variant of the coronavirus is very similar to that of India and California. Vaccines available in Poland work against all types of coronavirus, virologist Prof. Włodzimierz Gut.

  1. Of the many variants of the coronavirus, three fall into the “alert” category: British (B.1.1.7), South African (B.1.351) and Brazilian (P.1)
  2. The British has been dominating in Poland for several months, in February the first case of the B.1.351 strain was discovered, while the Brazilian one has been present in our country recently
  3. According to some experts, the P.1 variant is more contagious than the British one, and it is also more resistant to vaccines
  4. But, as prof. Włodzimierz Gut, “all current vaccines work against all variants”

Coronavirus in Poland. Three cases of the Indian variant

Health Minister Adam Niedzielski announced on Thursday that three cases of the Brazilian variant of the coronavirus were detected in Silesia.

In turn, scientists from the Gyncentrum Genetic Laboratory in Sosnowiec found 11 variants of the coronavirus in the population. Apart from the British variant B.1.1.7, the most popular in Poland, scientists found the Brazilian P.1 variant in the three tested samples. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health announced that there is also an Indian variant in Katowice, which affects nuns from the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Charity of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

PAP asked the virologist Prof. Włodzimierz Gut.

In his opinion, “the Brazilian variety has been around for a long time and had to finally arrive”. The expert explained that this variant was first identified in Brazil, then in the United States, Mexico and Europe. Also occurs in Japan.

  1. What are the variants of the coronavirus in Poland today?

Prof. Gut noted that the Brazilian variety is very similar to that of India and California. He pointed out that there is currently a discussion whether the same mutations of the coronavirus do not arise in different places.

All vaccines work against all variants

“Everyone focused on variants of the S protein in viruses, forgetting whether the virus originated in one place or came from another” – pointed out the expert. He emphasized that new varieties are constantly being developed.

«Mutations arise in each of us. The accumulation of these mutations in a given place does not answer the question whether a given variant was created in Brazil or in Poland »- said Prof. Gut.

  1. The most dangerous variants of the coronavirus. What do we know about them?

When asked if the Brazilian variant of the coronavirus could be more dangerous than others, he said he was “credited with infecting people who have had COVID-19, but it’s not quite so.” “Vaccinations normally have the same effect as the other variants,” said the expert.

Referring to the effectiveness of vaccines against the Brazilian variant of the coronavirus available on the Polish market, Prof. Gut reported that «virtually all vaccines work against all variants«.

«The general problem is the problem of detection and treatment. If we use certain detection methods in the area of the S protein and a mutation occurs there, this infected individual is initially considered to be uninfected and may continue to infect »- he explained. (PAP)
