We are entering a phase of the epidemic in which the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains dangerous individually, but not socially – virologist Prof. Włodzimierz Gut. He added that, in his opinion, it is too early to lift the epidemic.
«I would not advise you to say goodbye to SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus just yet. Unless he goes with the cross, but I doubt whether it will work »- Prof. Gut. He added that even society’s collective immunity to the virus did not protect against infections as such.
«It will simply shorten the transmission of the virus and this gives a chance of its elimination. However, the requirements are much higher. However, I would be afraid that in the long run, it may, to some extent, come back. However, we have reached such a stage of the epidemic that SARS-COV-2 becomes a virus that is dangerous individually, not socially »- pointed out the virologist.

In his opinion, a person who does not get vaccinated because, for example, he decides that the epidemic is no more – may become ill in the next infection season, if he has not acquired immunity so far.
«This virus, however, did not threaten our hospitality even before the current wave of infections. We are already behind us »- assessed prof. Gut.
In his opinion, however, it is too early to end the epidemic in Poland.
«I would wait for the external situation to stabilize. In many countries, the mass infections have not ended yet, the virus is mutating all the time and it may look different, for example in autumn 2022. I would recommend a certain abstinence in this regard »- he added.
At the same time, he stressed the need to better understand the mechanisms governing epidemiology.
«Neither vaccination nor acquired immunity will protect us from infection. Only a physical barrier can prevent this. Simply, at this stage, fewer and fewer people need hospitalization, the support of respirators, and this really qualitatively significantly changes the possibilities and needs of fighting the epidemic »- he pointed out.
