– I am aware of the dilemmas faced by the government, but during the epidemic there is no good solution. Each loosening of the restrictions results in an increase in infections – told PAP virologist Prof. Włodzimierz Gut. In his opinion, only mass vaccination can hasten the end of the pandemic.
Coronavirus in Poland. The restrictions were extended
The head of the health ministry, Adam Niedzielski, announced on Wednesday that the existing restrictions would be extended until April 18.
– With the ever increasing rates of hospitalization and, consequently, deaths, the government basically had no choice. No authority would come up with anything else. The drops in the daily number of infections are rather caused by the holiday season and cannot be used to loosen the sanitary requirements too quickly. The deaths in fact indicate an underestimation of infections, even in the worst weeks. This makes the situation difficult – pointed out the virologist.
In his opinion, we will see a real improvement in the situation when in Poland they are successfully vaccinated with two doses 15–20 million people. Let us remind you that over 2 million Poles have taken two doses of the vaccine to date.
– I am aware of the dilemmas faced by the government. I perfectly understand that in the hierarchy of priorities education is higher than entertainment. Anyway, this education can be organized somehow. There are no completely safe loosening of the restrictions. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the risk. She is not an easy one in the epidemic, he added.
Prof. Gut assessed that everything was still in the hands of society.
– Many things in the fresh air could be organized relatively safely. The problem is that after a year of the epidemic in Poland, we can see what is happening. As soon as there is any loosening, many people think it’s over. And then we rise again and fall into a vicious circle. Vaccinations can get us out of it. So far, there has been insufficient supply. Now the idea is to vaccinate quickly, efficiently, to hasten an end to the epidemic. History teaches us that every epidemic will end sometime, but there were some that kept coming back and trailing mankind for a long time. The virologist said.
