There will be no blockage of the health service in connection with the fifth wave of the epidemic – virologist Prof. Włodzimierz Gut. He pointed out that so far the number of beds in hospitals occupied by COVID-19 patients is declining, as is the number of ventilators seized.

He is currently in hospitals 14 patients from COVID-19, incl 1391 patients connected to ventilators. A week ago, on January 12, there were 17 patients with COVID-155 in hospitals, which is over three thousand more. Two weeks ago, on January 19, there were 5 COVID-19 patients in hospitals.

1391 patients are connected to a ventilator, and a week ago there were 1682 of them, which is nearly three hundred more.

At the same time, the health ministry informed on Wednesday about 30 new infections SARS-CoV-2.

Prof. Gut: there are fewer deaths than in December

«I am not expecting Armageddon. At this point, the number of occupied hospital beds intended for COVID-19 treatment is declining quite dynamically. There are also a lot less deaths than in December. Respirators are free for the vast majority. However, it is better to say today that there is a huge threat, and then that we have saved someone than to transplant the other way »- pointed out an experienced virologist.

In his opinion, in the coming days it will be visible whether the number of infections is still growing rapidly, or whether today we were dealing with some kind of accumulation after the weekend period, as well as many weeks with holidays.

“Infections have nothing to do with vaccinations”

“The number of deaths in this wave of the epidemic depends on the degree of immunization of the population. Fewer people in Poland became immunized than in Western Europe due to vaccinations, and a lot of infections were caused by infections. Taken together, this gives a picture that I do not expect a complete paralysis of healthcare. Of course, it is still heavily burdened and more people will go to hospitals, but not in a huge percentage. As for infections, they have nothing to do with vaccination. The vaccine does not protect against infection. I’ve said this many times before. The number of infections is due to the discipline of people. If people go through the epidemic at ease, the number of infections increases. If they follow any rules, it is stabilization »- he assessed.

He added that there is no need to panic about the next wave of the epidemic, but that it is necessary to “use your reason”.

«This, as well as reason, is lacking. However, scaring people will do nothing, but rather it will translate into additional deaths of frightened people from other health causes. Because if they are afraid to go to doctors and hospitals, these diseases will not wait »- he explained. (PAP)
