Who is immune to the coronavirus?

President of the Polish Society of Epidemiologists and Doctors of Infectious Diseases, prof. Robert Flisiak told PAP that there is a downward trend in the number of people who end up in hospitals due to COVID-19.

He added that a large part of society has already acquired natural resilience. Prof. Flisiak estimates that it is approx. 20 percent. population. These are people who have had coronavirus infection, in most cases asymptomatically.

The expert, asked whether the Wednesday number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (according to the Ministry of Health – 13) results from the addition of antigen tests to the total pool of tests, said: – We do not know what their percentage is in the total number of tests performed. This is due to the not very efficiently functioning system of recording the results – he said. However, he added that the system works more and more efficiently and is getting through.

– Not all results were recorded – especially negative, because the test is performed quickly in front of the patient, therefore, when it was negative, I am convinced that it was often not recorded – he said. He noted that this overestimates the percentage of positive results in the total number of tests performed.

Prof. Flisiak: there will be an increase in coronavirus infections after Christmas

Prof. Flisiak predicts that the downward trend in the number of confirmed infections will continue until Christmas.

– What will happen after Christmas will depend on the self-discipline of the celebrating people. We will probably see an increase, but it is difficult to predict its scale – he predicts.

He says that to ensure herd immunity in a population, immunization must be at 60%. (including both the vaccinated and those who have already been infected).

– Then the epidemic itself will end, provided that no changes are made in the virus genome that will thwart our efforts – said Prof. Flisiak.
