Most of them, however, will not be found in the official data, because there is no common testing anymore. – Simply put, Poland has “broken the thermometer” and pretends that there is no fever – emphasizes in an interview with Medonet prof. Krzysztof Filipiak. The fact that the number of patients in European countries is increasing day by day might suggest that we are dealing with a similar situation in Poland, because Omikron is not afraid of crossing our borders.

There is no thermometer, no fever

The expert noted that patients with COVID-19 in Poland “are certainly hundreds of times more than the official thousand a day”.

– Since the average of the weekly number of new COVID-19 cases per million inhabitants in France is currently 1639, in Germany 1070, do not believe that in Poland it is officially … 13 – summed up prof. Krzysztof Filipiak, internist, cardiologist, clinical pharmacologist, rector of the Medical University of Maria Skłodowskiej-Curie in Warsaw.

He also added that there is no indication that Omikron in sub-variant BA.4 and BA.5 – and they are responsible for the growing wave of infections – got scared of the Odra and Nysa Łużycka and does not want to cross it.

– Simply put, Poland has “broken the thermometer” and pretends that there is no fever – he concluded.

As he explained, PCR tests are ordered in Poland sporadically, and antigen tests performed at home, even if they are positive, are not included in the statistics.

In fact, 100 thousand. new cases

Prof. Filipiak referred to the epidemic situation in Germany. He noted that in a country with 80 million inhabitants, more than a million infections have been recorded in the past two weeks, and more than XNUMX seriously ill patients are in intensive care units.

– Gently counting and extrapolating these data to Poland, I would not be surprised if currently around 100. people in Poland were infected with Omikron BA.4 and BA.5 – noted the expert.

At the same time, he said that this wave is clearly coming from the West and is coming earlier than we expected, because it starts in July, not September or October.

Why are the sick not seen in medical facilities?

The professor also explained why this significant increase in infections is not seen in hospitals or clinics. First, he notes that the system for diagnosing patients has practically been abolished and “until hospitals are full again, we will not notice the wave”. In addition, in his opinion, we have gained some immunity, both due to vaccination and the disease of SARS-CoV-2 in the previous wave this year. But there are two more reasons it points to.

– We live in a country where there were already over 19 excess deaths during the COVID-250 pandemic. – paradoxically, the most sick and burdened people are already extinct – he explained.

Moreover, the professor pointed out that the important issue is that the new wave is associated with a more infectious form of the Omicron (sub-variant BA.4 and BA.5) but less virulent.

– We just don’t have symptoms of this infection very often. (…) Therefore, some of us are not even aware that a short-term cold, cold, worse well-being, a one-day “decline in form” may be just a new variant of Omikron, because healthy, vaccinated people may be infected with SARS-COV-2 with the Omikron variant BA.4 / BA.5 without any symptoms at all – he concluded.

Do you have symptoms indicative of COVID-19? Do a quick home antigen test. Available in Medonet Market.

At the same time, the expert reminded that some patients in Western Europe describe new, non-specific symptoms, such as: temporary drops in blood pressure, fainting, but other fears are indistinguishable from other minor colds or flu: cough, fever, malaise, headache, sinus pain, throat pain, muscle aches, feeling of breakdown.

What awaits us now?

The expert expects the sixth wave to accelerate and become visible as hospital wards fill up. He therefore called on several points. Namely, to urgently replenish vaccinations, take the third dose (booster) and vaccinate those willing after 65, not after 80 years of age. In his opinion, testing should also be resumed in order to know how many new infections are actually there and to whom new, oral antiviral drugs (5-day, short home therapy) should be administered. Thanks to this, it would also be possible to secure the right amount of drugs.

Will there be any further restrictions?

Prof. Filipiak, however, does not think that we will face lockdowns and further restrictions, although the virus – even the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants – will still be dangerous for our seniors (people over 65), as well as for all other chronically ill people with immunodeficiencies, after transplants, during oncological therapy or in dialysis patients.

– For them, infection, even with this scant Omicron, can be fatal. It is for them that it is worth vaccinating, avoiding crowds in closed spaces, still wearing protective masks in the means of communication, still observing hygiene and frequently washing hands – he emphasized.

– Unfortunately, the wave of Omikron BA.4 and BA.5 is accelerating, and ahead of us is European autumn and winter, where we will spend time indoors – warned prof. Filipiak.

Protect yourself and your loved ones. Do not forget about the mask when you are among people – this will allow you to avoid contamination. You will find a set of biodegradable FFP2 masks in Medonet Market.
