The fourth wave of COVID-19 will not be the last we will face – said the president of the Polish Society of Public Health, Prof. Andrzej Fal. He called for immunization, also for pregnant women, because COVID-19 creates additional risks for the unborn child.

«Now, in certain places in Poland, the number of infections is so high that it is already plateauing and should not be higher. Just because there will not be the highest number of cases forecasted does not mean that people will not get sick. Fal, who is also the head of the Department of Allergology, Lung Diseases and Internal Diseases at the hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration in Warsaw.

He pointed out that the current situation of COVID-19 patients is the result of decisions made by them against scientific evidence, based on unjustified beliefs about the negative effects of vaccines. He emphasized that younger and younger people who have not been vaccinated or, in a minority, vaccinated, but are older, with many chronic diseases, come to hospitals.
«If we are talking about the sick who are vaccinated, they are very elderly people who have various other diseases. Despite the fact that they are vaccinated, their immunity, due to age and other diseases, is unfortunately weak.
The second group consists of 40-year-olds, 50-year-olds, completely healthy, without any chronic diseases, but unfortunately unvaccinated. The question is, what can be done for them when they are in a heavy condition, under a respirator? Doctors and nurses are doing everything they can, but sometimes it is not enough »- he said.

He added that people presenting to the hospital in this wave of the epidemic have more advanced lung lesions than patients during the third wave.
«This is mainly because they stay at home longer with symptoms. We do not actually have statistically compiled data, but based on experience, it can be seen that such people report much later. In the previous waves, the patient reported shortness of breath after two or three days, now these are rare cases. The patient most often claims that they started 7 or 10 days ago. This is one of the reasons why the course of the disease is more severe at the moment. The worse the patient’s condition is, the less favorable the prognosis is »- he noted.
There are also many unvaccinated pregnant women, and some have a hard time getting infected.
«Remember that COVID-19 also creates additional risks for the fetus. Blood oxygenation in a pregnant woman should be much better than in an average person due to the fact that the fetus is oxygenated and the pregnancy has a chance to proceed properly »- he explained.
“Therefore, women should not hesitate to vaccinate and wait until the second strip shows on the pregnancy test. They should do them when they assume that they want to become mothers »- he added.
He appealed that they should be vaccinated not only for themselves, but above all for their child. In addition, remember to take the full dose of the vaccine for it to be effective.
“If I decide to vaccinate today, in about two months I will be a person with humoral immunity, ie antibodies and cellular immunity. If we are talking about the ongoing pandemic wave, I will not have time to develop immunity in this wave, which does not change the fact that I should be vaccinated »- he noted.
He added that all indications are that this wave will not be the last we will face, although we should go through the infections more gently.
«The more of us get vaccinated, the more intense the next bouts of infection become coronavirus will be smaller. We are in the middle of a pandemic at the moment, »he said.
At the same time, prof. Fal stressed that developing pharmacology in COVID-19 therapy is an important step forward, but vaccines are essential. He also expressed the opinion that a covid passport should now be used.
«It is not about punishing the unvaccinated, but about incentives – carrots. If we were all unvaccinated, there would probably be a lockdown and we would all stay home. But some of us said they would get vaccinated and did it. Therefore, as a bonus, such persons should be allowed to move around more freely. It should be a reward for showing awareness and getting vaccinated, in any case a punishment ”- said the expert.
He noted that from the point of view of a medic, the point is to make decisions so that people do not get sick, and not to wonder if we are able to cure them.
«There is something called the pyramid of prevention. At the very beginning, there is education, then primary prevention, that is, avoidance of the harmful factor, then secondary – trying to prevent the harmful factor from causing the disease. Only at the top of this pyramid is tertiary prophylaxis, i.e. limiting the effects of being ill. It cannot be said that we will only implement tertiary prophylaxis now. As a doctor, however, I would encourage you to go to the lower levels of this pyramid »- summed up the current strategy of the health ministry. (PAP)
