We still do not know how long antibodies to COVID-19 last, but according to the latest studies in convalescents, this immunity lasts up to eleven months, and not – as previously reported – from six to eight months – told PAP a cardiologist, lipidologist, epidemiologist of heart disease and dishes of prof. Maciej Banach from the Institute of Polish Mother’s Health Center in Łódź. The expert also expressed the hope that we would achieve population resistance to SARS-CoV-2 after the summer holidays, in September.
- The latest data from the Ministry of Health indicate 775 new cases of coronavirus in Poland and 125 deaths
- The pandemic is subsiding, but people cannot be made to ignore sanitary regulations, says Prof. Maciej Banach
- So far, 19,5 million doses of vaccines have been administered in Poland. Almost 13,5 million people received the first dose
- Taking into account the convalescents – probably about 50 percent. society already has immunity to the coronavirus – Banach estimates
- More information can be found on the Onet homepage.
The scientist emphasized that he was counting on the Poles to acquire the so-called population immunity, i.e. the barrier posed to the coronavirus as a result of vaccination of an increasing number of the country’s inhabitants, preventing the spread of the pathogen, and thus reducing the susceptibility to COVID-19.
«It seems the vaccine distribution is good. I sincerely wish you all that this population resistance will appear after the summer holidays, in September this year, there is a chance for it, »Banach said. “However, it is the daily rates of infections, illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths that will answer the question of when this immunity will appear” – he noted. «I hope that population immunity will appear when 60 percent. society will be vaccinated»- pointed out Banach.
The professor pointed out that the pandemic is subsiding, but it cannot be made – despite many restrictions being lifted – people ignoring sanitary regulations.
“There are fewer and fewer infections, but there are still many deaths,” he admitted. «Despite the efforts of medics and good indicators during the vaccination campaign, I believe that there is a risk of the epidemic returning. Now everything depends on us »- he emphasized.
- Dr. Sutkowski: You can have fun wherever you can, but be careful
«Much also depends on people who are not outright opponents of vaccination, but people who do not vaccinate, observe. They are looking at what will happen, how many infections, deaths and so on »- he predicted. He considered it to be a very negative phenomenon, because according to him, this method puts others at risk, in some way destroys our joint efforts. “Now there are also matters related to going outside Poland, that is the passport system, which – as Minister Michał Dworczyk mentioned – should start functioning in July” – recalled Banach.
«I do not mention the so-called anti-vaccine agents, but if there are more such “vaccine observers”, who, however, do not undergo long treatments, it may happen that we do not vaccinate these 50 or 60 percent. population of the country »- warned the professor.
- Prof. Flisiak: Nothing will convince anti-vaccines
«I agree with the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, that – taking into account the convalescents – probably around 50% society already has immunity to the coronavirus. However, please remember that we still do not know how long these antibodies will last »- he noted.
«There is good news on this, however. According to the latest research in convalescents, this immunity lasts up to eleven months, and not – as previously reported – six to eight months »- explained Banach.
“The article, which appeared a few days ago in the journal” Nature “, also confirmed that although the body may have less antibodies from month to month, there are memory cells in the bone marrow, a little dormant, but they still produce these antibodies” – the process was described by a scientist.
- Coronavirus immunity is long-term. New research confirms this
From a medical and immunity point of view, according to the physician, another dose of the anticovid agent may be indicated. «The so-called vaccination with the third dose may most likely be needed to maintain long-term immunity in the society, »he said.
When asked by PAP whether cash prizes for undergoing vaccination are a good idea, the scientist replied that this was not a way that would convince him to the end.
“I would prefer other incentives in the form of well-done targeted educational campaigns” – summed up prof. Banach.
