How is varicose veins removed and what does it involve? Minimally invasive treatment and hybrid methods
The most effective and safest methods of treating varicose veins are thermal methods (removal of varicose veins with laser, high-frequency EVRF or steam, non-thermal methods (including sclerotherapy, tissue adhesives) and hybrid methodscombining different techniques in one treatment. Let’s look at each group.
Thermal methods of treating varicose veins consist in closing the diseased vessels with the help of high temperature generated inside the veins. Important! The high temperature is in no way felt by the patient.
The temperature is raised with a laser beam (EVLT method), radio waves (EVRF method) or water vapor (SVS method). Despite the use of different techniques, the procedures are similar. The doctor makes a small incision in the skin and introduces a guide (a thin wire) into the vessel, over which he slips a special t-shirt. When the sheath is in the vessel, the doctor pulls out the guidewire and inserts the catheter in its place. This, in turn, allows the emission of energy from water vapor, radio waves or laser light. The doctor slowly moves the catheter back towards the incision and energy is distributed across the vessel.
Worth knowing! Does the procedure hurt and when can you go home?
The varicose veins removal procedure is almost completely painless. It is performed under local anesthesia. The patient can leave the clinic on the same day. There is no need to undergo a long convalescence. After the procedure, special compression garments should be worn, and you should not use the sauna, exposing your legs to the sun or long, especially hot baths, for a while. There are practically no traces left after the treatment.
Non-thermal methods of treating varicose veins they can be used as an auxiliary, e.g. in laser treatment, but not only – in the case of smaller lesions, they can be used alone. What are they about? A specialized substance is introduced into the lumen of the vessel, which closes or seals the vessel. Depending on the chosen method, the doctor may decide to use the so-called tissue adhesives or sclerosant. With the help of fine needles and a small catheter, the substance is applied to the vessel. As a result of its action, the walls of the veins come closer together, heal and become fibrotic.
Hybrid methods They are extremely effective because they allow you to close vessels of different sizes during one treatment. In a relatively short time, it is possible to remove both large, visible varicose veins and small, broken vessels, the so-called spider veins.
Hybrid treatment allows you to achieve the intended effects during one treatment and at the same time shortens the convalescence period.
