The Ministry of Health reacted to the voices about the lack of availability of Euthyrox 88 mcg. The Ministry of Health issued an official announcement stating the position of the drug manufacturer.
Missing Euthyrox 88 in the pharmacy
The media has been reporting for several weeks about the lack of Euthyrox 88 mcg drugs in the pharmacy. Euthyrox is used in patients (more often female patients) with a disturbed thyroid gland. The last drug delivery to Poland took place in December. As we read in the announcement of the Ministry of Health, the responsible entity Merck Sp. z o. o. informed the Minister of Health about difficulties in ensuring continuity of supplies of the 88 mcg dose. The next delivery is planned for the turn of February / March this year. Another one at the turn of March and April.
MZ emphasizes that other doses of Euthyrox are available in pharmacies.
– At the same time, the Minister of Health points out that the doctor manages the patient’s treatment process, so in the event of problems with the purchase of a given drug, the doctor may use substitutes or alternative drug technologies that can be used in a given indication – we read in the release.
The worst situation in terms of accessibility is in the Łódzkie and Lubuskie voivodships. In local pharmacies there is not a single package of Euthrox 88 in packages of 50 and 100 tablets. The situation is best in the Lubelskie, Podkarpackie and Świętokrzyskie Voivodeships, where several dozen drug packages (50 tablets each) are available. You cannot buy Euthrox 88 in a package of 100 tablets in any province (data from ktomalek.pl)
Euthyrox with a changed line-up
From September 2, 2019, Euthyrox has a new composition and packaging. The changes were previously announced by Merck. The composition changes concerned the excipients, which aimed to ensure that the content of the active substance remained constant throughout the shelf life of the product. Lactose, which is not tolerated by more and more patients, was also removed from the composition.
