When raising a child, you need to keep in mind that the child is active and lively, and to a greater extent solves his problems than is brought up by us. We want the child to study with us or study on his own, and at this time the child has his own affairs and interests, his own life. To what extent can we intervene in his life, accomplish what we want, make sure that he learns? How can we contribute to this?

Or to interest the child, or to force, or to influence the child through the environment and lifestyle, more broadly — to carry out the upbringing of life.

How to Take the Best of Western and Asian Parenting Traditions

It is interesting to compare the Western and Asian (for example, Chinese) traditions of education: they are seriously different. It seems that the Western tradition of upbringing has made too much of a tilt towards “saving”, towards “creating life and spiritual comfort”, towards non-judgmental and inclusiveness, forgetting about the need to prepare a child for life, the need to educate discipline, educate strong-willed qualities, the ability to keep tension and overcome difficulties. When a child essentially becomes the head of the family, telling his parents what he likes and what makes him uncomfortable now, nothing good will come of it in the long run. Asian parents mean strength, not fragility, in their children and are ready to demand the highest results from their children, expressing their assessments of success and failure as frankly as possible. Western parents can only ask the child to try to do «the best he can.» The Eastern mother will say: «You are lazy, all your classmates have passed you.» Asians believe that the best motivation for a child is his real success, and the desire to do something comes after the fact that the child begins to do any business with high quality. Activities that used to be unpleasant begin to bring joy, and this, in turn, stimulates even more hard work. See →
