Prevention of legionellosis (Legionnaires’ disease)
Can we prevent? |
The systems of air conditioning and water supply, as well as swimming pools or heated baths found in hospitals, industrial sites, hotels and leisure centers are potential sources of proliferation of bacteria responsible for legionella. Regular cleaning and disinfection of these systems is the easiest and most effective way to reduce the risk of bacteria proliferation and thus reduce the risk of contamination. At home, cleaning and disinfecting devices that release water droplets, such as shower heads, whirlpools and humidifiers, reduces the chances of bacteria growing. |
Basic preventive measures |
Legionellosis can cause severe complications, especially in people with weakened immune or respiratory systems. Avoiding smoking reduces the risk of infection in the event of exposure to the bacteria responsible for the disease. |
Measures to prevent complications |
Legionellosis is treated with antibiotics. The earlier the disease is diagnosed and treated, the lower the risk of complications or death from the disease. |
