Prevention of hypotension

Basic preventive measures

In case of orthostatic hypotension

  • Get up slowly. Before getting out of bed, stretch and sit on the edge of the bed for 1 minute. Also avoid getting up quickly from a chair or armchair.
  • Drink water and others drinks regularly appear. In hot weather, in people who take diuretics and limit their salt intake, water and salt intake can prevent low blood pressure. Seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Avoid the consumption of alcohol. Even consumed in moderation, it can contribute to hypotension.
  • Avoid consuming cannabis (marijuana).
  • Avoid hot environments. The heat dilates the blood vessels and increases sweating, which can cause a slight drop in blood pressure.
  • Eat slightly saltier food. This may help people who usually avoid the salt shaker, but it is not a general recommendation. Salt causes water retention. Consult a doctor before increasing your salt intake.
  • Leave the legs uncrossed. While sitting, crossing your legs puts pressure on the veins and forces the blood to stay in the lower body.
  • If necessary, wear compression stockings.
  • Avoid physical exertion when it is too hot.
  • Quickly drink 500 ml of cold water to increase blood volume, when long standing is required (shopping, for example)5.
  • If you have a heart problems or high blood pressure, see his doctor regularly so that he can adjust the dosage of treatment.
  • If you suspect that taking any medication is causing hypotension, talk to your doctor.

  • Do not drink alcohol before and after meals.
  • Avoid overly large meals : favor lighter and more frequent meals, not too high in sugar.
  • A walk after a meal can help, but it is better to avoid physical exertion4.

Remark. Drinking coffee or tea at the end of a meal alleviates postprandial hypotension because caffeine increases blood pressure. However, it is recommended that you do not increase your coffee consumption without first talking to your doctor.
