Recommended reading: “Why can’t you take medications without a doctor’s prescription?”. Preparations for the treatment of thrush are a group of various medications used to treat this disease. Thrush is an infectious fungal disease that affects the skin, mucous membranes and internal organs with the possibility of generalization of the infection. Candidiasis differ in types and severity of the disease, but they are all characterized by a whitish cheesy coating, because of which the disease got its name. The factors predisposing to the development of candidiasis are quite diverse: intoxication, neoplasms, metabolic disorders and other diseases leading to the development of immunodeficiency states.

For the treatment of the disease, drugs of various pharmacological groups are used: antibiotics, antifungal agents and probiotics. What are the most effective drugs for thrush? What is the best use for this disease? How to take medicine for women, men and children? The answers to these questions will be presented below.

Medicines for the treatment of the disease

For the treatment of any type of candidiasis, various types of local and general antifungal drugs are used: suppositories, gels, tablets, drops, creams, sprays and others.

Usually, only topical treatment is sufficient for patients. And only with the ineffectiveness of local therapy, the specialist prescribes systemic antifungal drugs.

Modern medicines used in the treatment of this disease are aimed not only at eliminating the unpleasant symptoms of the disease, but also at preventing the reproduction of the causative agent of thrush – a yeast-like fungus of the genus Candida. This action is achieved by activating the body’s immune system and direct action on the pathogen.

But the most effective today is the complex therapy of candidiasis, in which local preparations are used in combination with antimycotic agents. In addition, it is recommended to include drugs that normalize the microbiocenosis of the intestine and other biotopes of the patient’s body in the complex of therapy. This approach helps to cure even advanced thrush in the chronic stage.

Although many of these drugs are sold in any pharmacy without a prescription, self-medication is not the best way out in this situation. Thrush is a dangerous and insidious disease that is fraught with a high recurrence rate and the development of resistance to widely used drugs. Therefore, before taking any of the medicines for the treatment of thrush, you should consult your doctor.

Preparations for the treatment of thrush in women

For the treatment of thrush at home, women often use douching with herbal infusions and drugs, among which the most popular are Chlorhexidine and Furacilin, which have an antiseptic effect. Sometimes in such cases, sodium tetraborate (borax) in glycerin is used. For the rehabilitation of the mucous membranes of the vagina, the Malavit solution, which is used for douching, has proven itself well, as well as tampons impregnated with such a solution or gel contribute to the rapid restoration of damaged tissues. However, this treatment will not be enough. Douching is good to use before the introduction of local drugs: vaginal suppositories or tablets. Some of them are in poor contact with the mucosa, which contains a lot of copious secretions. Therefore, before the introduction of antimicrobial drugs, it is recommended to wash the walls of the vagina, removing curdled flakes from there.

The most popular remedies for the treatment of candidiasis in women and girls are Lomexin and Zalain vaginal capsules, Pimafucin suppositories, Neotrizol, Miconazole, Fluconazole. Other drugs for internal use are also effective: Natamycin, Nystatin, Clotrimazole.

Some local remedies, such as Lomexin and Zalain, are used once, sometimes a second course of drug treatment is possible after a week.

Often, with thrush, specialists prescribe the drug Metronidazole. However, it should be used only in complex treatment, since by itself it is ineffective. It is well complemented by Metrogil gel, Neo-Penotran suppositories and Trichopol tablets, which are also used to treat candidiasis. In combination, these drugs only enhance the therapeutic effect of each other.

With especially advanced stages or chronic candidiasis, the doctor may prescribe injectable forms of the drug for the successful treatment of the disease.

You should also know that after the main treatment, the doctor will prescribe medications to restore the beneficial microflora of the vagina without fail. Such dosage forms include: vaginal capsules Laktozhinal, Atsilakt, systemic probiotics Bifidumbacterin, Linex, Acipol, Bifidum BAG.

One of the complications of taking antibiotics is the development of thrush. Especially often, women report thrush after taking the antibacterial drug Unidox Solutab. Therefore, probiotics are also recommended during the course of antibiotic treatment.

Treatment of thrush during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Thrush often occurs in pregnant women. During this period in the female body there is an increased production of the hormone progesterone, which contributes to the normal course of pregnancy. The acidity of the vagina also changes, and immunity is significantly reduced. All this leads to increased growth of yeast-like fungi.

In addition, the reviews of many women indicate that candidiasis during pregnancy can cause the hormonal drug Utrozhestan. Although the drug itself does not affect the occurrence of this disease in any way, when it is used, a violation of the microflora of the genital organs is observed, which provokes the development of a fungal infection.

How to treat thrush during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

It should be understood that not all drugs can be used by women during this period. This is especially true of systemic drugs that are able to penetrate into the blood, breast milk, and also through the placental barrier, thereby exerting a toxic effect on the fetus. Pregnant women, especially in the first trimester, are strictly prohibited from taking certain vaginal suppositories.

The safest remedy during pregnancy and breastfeeding is Pimafucin. In addition, it is the only approved drug for use in the first trimester. Usually, one Pimafucin suppository is prescribed for pregnant women at night for three days. In more advanced cases, it is possible to use Pimafucin tablets, which must be taken four times a day, one tablet each. The course of treatment is usually seven days.

Also during pregnancy, Hexicon suppositories are recommended, which have practically no side effects.

During pregnancy, with the exception of the first trimester, you can use drugs such as Clotrimazole, Terzhinan, Polygynax, Livarol.

To increase immunity in such a period, rectal suppositories Viferon or Genferon are used.

Medicines to treat thrush during the menstrual cycle

During menstruation, very often the treatment of this disease with vaginal suppositories and tablets is prohibited. However, treatment already started should not be interrupted. It is recommended, if possible, to use suppositories or tablets based on sertaconazole during menstruation – Zalain, Sertamikol, Sertaconazole, as well as with the active ingredient povidone-iodine. This list includes drugs Povidin, Betadine, Povidone-iodine and others.

Also, when introducing vaginal suppositories during the menstrual cycle, you must follow a few simple rules:

  1. It is best to introduce candles at night.
  2. If necessary, enter the suppository in the morning, after the procedure, it is necessary to lie down for half an hour so that the contents of the medicine do not leak out along with the secretions.
  3. During menstruation, douching is strictly prohibited.

In addition, during such a period, it is necessary to observe hygiene very carefully:

  • change tampons and pads in a timely manner;
  • often wash or take a shower in the morning and evening;
  • change your underwear often;
  • do not use scented hygiene products.

Greater preference during this period should be given to oral tablets. The best of the antifungal drugs for menstruation: Fluconazole, Nystatin, Futsis, Pimafucin, Mikosist and Diflucan.

The regimen for taking Fluconazole with thrush is simple – one capsule with a dosage of 150 mg once. Fluconazole, like any of its analogues, is a strong and effective remedy, but in more advanced stages it may be necessary to take another capsule a few days later to consolidate therapy.

Preparations for thrush for children

Children, especially newborns, most often suffer from oral thrush and intestinal candidiasis. At the same time, you should know that the course of treatment, if thrush is detected in infants, must be completed by both the child and the mother.

For the treatment of candidiasis in newborns, topical drugs are most often used. These include: Nystatin drops, Candide solution, Iodinol, Miramistin.

Miramistin in the form of a solution or ointment is applied directly to the affected area with a thin layer.

Candide solution also treats damaged areas in babies. The course of such treatment is two weeks. It is necessary to take the medicine no more than three times a day.

In more severe stages of the disease, in addition to local agents, systemic antimicrobials are also used in therapy. Most often, Nystatin is used for these purposes. However, it should be remembered that this drug can cause allergic reactions in a child.

Medicines for thrush for men

Men are also susceptible to this disease, although much less often than the fair sex. In this case, most often thrush in men is asymptomatic, and the patient may not even suspect that he is a carrier of this disease. This is directly related to the structure of the genitourinary system of the male body: it is difficult for fungi to gain a foothold on the surface of the mucous membrane.

Candidiasis is treated in the stronger sex using mainly local antifungal agents: creams, ointments, gels, solutions for external use, which are applied directly to the penis. These drugs include: ointment Clotrimazole Akrikhin, Iodinol and others.

At advanced stages, systemic drugs are also used: Fluconazole, Econazole, Natamycin, Miconazole, Lamizol, Diflucan, Mikosist and other drugs.

In conclusion

Thrush is an unpleasant fungal disease that causes serious discomfort to the sick person even in mild stages. During the transition to a severe and chronic stage, such a disease leads to serious and unpleasant consequences for the whole organism. Therefore, when the first symptoms of candidiasis appear, it is necessary to seek help from a specialist to prescribe an effective treatment.

Currently, there are many modern antimicrobial drugs, both local and systemic, with timely treatment of which thrush passes quickly without causing serious complications. But self-medication in such cases is not worth doing, so as not to harm even more. Only a qualified specialist should prescribe such drugs.
