Le pregnancy mask, ou chloasma, is the bête noire of women Pregnant. Why does it appear? When you are pregnant, your body makes more female hormones, which leads to increased melanin synthesis. As soon as you get out in the sun, these pigments responsible for tanning are disrupted by hormones. They then rise in the greatest disorder from the deep layers of the skin to the surface of the epidermis. Small unsightly brown spots can then appear on the skin of the face.

How to recognize a pregnancy mask?

Pregnancy mask is very common among pregnant women. It is usually around the 4th or 6th month that it can appear. It manifests itself in small brown spots, more or less regular in shape but well defined. Generally distributed over the forehead, cheekbones, cheeks and top of the lips, they can be numerous enough to form the famous mask. If you are brunette, you are more likely to develop this reaction to the sun. But beware, contrary to popular belief, this can also happen to blonde women.

How to avoid the pregnancy mask?

To avoid the pregnancy mask, it is essential to apply a crème solaire. We choose one with a very strong index (above 30) that you will apply generously on the face and neck from the first sunny days and until the end of autumn. Same thing in winter, if you go to the mountains. But this precaution is not a permit to expose yourself to direct sunlight! Anyway, when you are pregnant, you rarely stand the heat. How to remove the mask of pregnancy?

In general, after the birth of the child, the spots gradually disappear (after six months after childbirth). But this is not always true. To find out if the spots that have appeared on our face require medical treatment, we do the following test: stretch the spots slightly between two fingers. If they clear up, this proves that they only affect the epidermis. They will then leave easily with depigmenting creams (to be applied twice a day).

In the opposite case, only treatments prescribed by a dermatologist will make them disappear. He will offer you more effective solutions, such as exfoliations, but only those that are not very aggressive for the skin. A superficial depigmenting peel will be prescribed and will require very rigorous sun protection afterwards.
