During pregnancy, a woman produces more female hormones, which leads to an increase in melanin levels. If during this period the skin is exposed to the sun, then hyperpigmentation can be observed on the face. This condition is known as “pregnancy mask” or chloasma.
SYMPTOMS
The effect of hormones…
The “mask of pregnancy” appears in most women starting from the fourth month of pregnancy. In the body of a pregnant woman, a significant amount of female hormones (estrogens) is produced, which also cause an increase in the level of melanin. Hyperpigmentation appears as grayish patches, usually in the center of the forehead, on the chin, and around the mouth. It takes the form of irregularly shaped brown pigment spots.
CAUSES
…and the sun
The sun’s rays significantly increase the risk of developing a “pregnancy mask”. Indeed, on a clear day, the sun’s rays can lead to excessive production of melanin, manifested by chloasma. In principle, the spots disappear six months after childbirth. However, the risk of recurrence during a subsequent pregnancy is high. Therefore, it is desirable to prevent the appearance of a “pregnancy mask”.
CARE
How to prevent the appearance of a “pregnancy mask”
To prevent the “pregnancy mask” from appearing, remember one rule: protect your skin every day, even in the city. The point is not to hide from the sun, but to follow some recommendations while in the sun:
- wear a hat;
- protect your skin with sunscreen;
- apply cream every two hours;
- Apply an anti-pigmentation cream at home in the evening.
All these precautions should be observed continuously throughout the day.
