How to grow a variety of potatoes Queen Anna

The most important thing that a gardener must do is to plant potatoes correctly in order to subsequently get a good harvest. It is customary to plant tubers in the ground in most of the country in early May. By this time, the soil will warm up well and dry out.

Attention! One of the secrets of growing potatoes of this variety is planting in warm and slightly moist soil. If the soil is too wet, the tubers will not be able to “breathe” and the germination of potatoes will stop.

In different regions of the country, suitable conditions for planting potatoes are created at different times. On average, we can say that the best time for planting potato tubers is the third decade of April – the first half of May.

Potato Queen Anne prefers well-lit places. There should not be stagnant water on the site, it is better if this place is protected from strong winds. The soil is preferably loose, well-permeable, sufficiently nutritious.

If the composition of the soil does not meet these requirements, it can be improved. To do this, fertilizers, wood ash, peat, coarse river sand or lime are added to the ground.

Advice! Potato beds are best placed in a north-south direction. This will allow the bushes to evenly illuminate the rays of the sun and warm up.

Before planting, the tubers are sorted out: medium-sized potatoes, of the correct shape, without damage and rot, are most suitable as planting material. Then potatoes need to be warmed up, for this, the seeds are brought into the house or into another heated room. When the tubers germinate, they are slightly greened – Kept in direct sunlight.

A step-by-step description of the process of planting potatoes looks like this:

  3. No more than one potato is placed in each hole, otherwise there will be too many tubers – they will not have enough space for normal development, which will cause the potatoes to shrink.
  4. Immediately after planting, until the soil is dry and windy, the pits are buried.
  5. From above it is recommended to mulch planting potatoes with peat. The thickness of the peat layer should be 2-3 cm.
Attention! It is not recommended to plant this particular variety with cut tubers. Potatoes for planting must be whole.

So, all care for potato beds is as follows:

  • during the period of tying tubers, potatoes must water regularly and abundantly. The phase of active formation of potatoes begins simultaneously with the flowering period of the bushes. It was at this time that potato plantings were watered at least once a week. It is better to use spray watering so as not to wash out the roots and tubers.

Reviews

Alexander, 58 years old, Tomsk
In my summer cottage, I planted many different varieties of potatoes. In the first two years, as a rule, the harvest is always good, then the tubers become smaller, and they become much smaller. This year I planted several new varieties at once, among them was the German Queen Anna. I can say that this potato is unpretentious, resistant to diseases. By the end of summer, almost all the bushes were “mowed down” by phytophthora, but Anna remained green, as she was before. Probably due to the fact that the bushes were green for a long time, the tubers gained a large amount of starch. As a result, dug out potatoes are perfectly boiled and are perfect for mashing or cooking “in their uniforms”. The taste of the tubers is good, moderately sweet, the flesh is dry, without excess water. Next year I will plant with my own seeds. I hope that Anna will not be reborn soon, because we liked the variety. I show the harvest in the photo.

Potato Queen Anne

Conclusion

Potatoes of German selection were created specifically for growing in the middle lane. Queen Anna can grow on almost any soil, but chernozems, loams and sandstones, which pass air and moisture well, are most suitable for her. It is practically not necessary to take care of the bushes.

All that is required from the gardener is timely watering during the flowering period, removing inflorescences, and pest control. In response, Anna will reward the owner with a bountiful harvest of large and very tasty tubers.
