Post-flood epidemics. What is sick after “great water”?

Germany was hit by a massive flood. Great water also flooded Belgium, and the situation in the Netherlands is also worrying. Flooding is not only about flooded houses or cars. Along with the water, bacteria that are hazardous to health multiply, which can be the beginning of an epidemic.

Outbreaks in flooded areas are mainly associated with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Campylobacteriosis – is a disease caused by bacteria of the genus Campylobacter that occur in the digestive tract of animals, the disease is characterized by severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, fever. The infection may also lead to complications – changes in the joints may appear. You can become infected with bacteria by drinking contaminated water or unpasteurized milk and by eating undercooked meat. There are also infections when bathing in dirty water.

Leptospirosis – a disease caused by spirochetes that penetrate through damaged skin or mucous membranes. The disease manifests itself in a disorder of many organs: kidneys, liver, as well as hemorrhages, jaundice and even meningitis. Tetanus – often fatal disease, infection occurs through contamination of the wound with earth. Symptoms include: general breakdown, sweating, tingling at the site of injury, increased muscle tension, trismus, body tension.
