A pregnancy test allows you to check if a late period means you are pregnant. A positive pregnancy test result is marked with two dashes. What are the types of pregnancy tests and how do they work? When should you see a gynecologist? Does a positive pregnancy test always mean pregnancy? What tests will confirm that we are pregnant?
Positive pregnancy test – types
There are several types of pregnancy tests available on the market – strip, plate and stream. Each of them works by testing the hormone hCG, which is contained in the urine when fertilization occurs. The hCG hormone can be detected even one week after the fetus is implanted in the uterus. By performing a pregnancy test, we can get a negative result while pregnant. This happens if we run the test too quickly before hCG levels are high enough. There is always one dash on the pregnancy test. This is the so-called test line. It is only the second dash and it informs about the presence of the hCG hormone in urine. Most often, a result with two lines – a positive result – means pregnancy.
At Medonet Market, you can buy both streaming and plaque pregnancy tests. Check the offer. We also recommend a home test kit for women planning a pregnancy, which includes a pregnancy test, an ovulation test and a test for intimate infections.
Positive pregnancy test – when the result is not pregnant?
However, a positive pregnancy test does not always mean pregnancy. In some cases it may be false. For example, taking certain medications may show two lines on the pregnancy test. Most often, these are drugs that are taken during fertility treatment. A positive pregnancy test may also be a symptom of a cyst on the ovaries. Then the body produces the hormone hCG, but vaginal bleeding may also occur and menstruation may be irregular. Moreover, with cysts of this type, headaches and even loss of consciousness can occur. Cysts can be malignant, so do not underestimate the first symptoms and contact your doctor who will order a vaginal ultrasound scan.
Unfortunately, the pregnancy test will also be positive for an ectopic pregnancy. This type of pregnancy is very dangerous to the health and life of a woman, therefore the embryo should be removed as soon as possible.
Positive pregnancy test – confirmation of pregnancy
If the first pregnancy test showed two lines – stay calm. Regardless of whether the pregnancy was planned or not, it is worth repeating the test after a week. Only with the second positive result should you see a doctor. Performing an examination too early, even by a gynecologist, may not confirm pregnancy at all. Therefore, it is recommended that the first gynecological visit is made when the planned period is delayed. The ultrasound examination itself can confirm pregnancy only around the seventh week after the last menstruation.
It is important not to do any research on your own. We are talking about ultrasound and prenatal tests. The doctor who conducts our pregnancy should decide about everything. The same goes for dietary supplements. The only thing that can be taken after the appearance of two lines on the pregnancy test is folic acid and wait calmly for an appointment with a specialist who will tell us what to do next.
