Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or blue oil rod, is known as the nosocomial bacterium because this is where it is most often caught. The bacterium also spreads fear in public bathing areas. Who is it dangerous for?
At the Arkonka bathing site in Szczecin, a stick of blue oil was detected for the second time this season. The pools had to be closed immediately and undergo extensive chlorination and cleaning.
«It is a dangerous bacterium. It is brought by people », warns Andrzej Kus, spokesman for Zakład Usług Komunalnych, in an interview with gs24.pl. She emphasizes that the stick is especially dangerous for people with reduced immunity.
Blue oil stick – what diseases does it cause and for whom is it dangerous?
The blue oil stick is resistant to high temperatures. A warm, sunny summer is ideal for her to develop. It usually occurs in water and soil, but also on the human body.

It should not be dangerous for healthy people. However, people with reduced immunity, such as those suffering from cystic fibrosis or oncological diseases, must beware of it. The baton of blue oil could be the cause otitis, sinusitis, infections of the digestive system or urinary tract infections.
Sometimes, in states of reduced immunity, it attacks the lungs or the brain, and then it can be very dangerous.
Where does the stick of blue oil in bathing areas come from?
The bacterium causes infections in hospitals. People who have been in the hospital can bring it to the swimming pool.
Blue oil sticks are very hard to get rid of. It is resistant to most disinfectants. It requires treatment with a combination of two antibiotics, but sometimes this does not work, because the blue oil rod is resistant to many pharmaceuticals.

With many bacteria, it is often enough to shower before entering the pool to stay hygienic and prevent them from spreading. However, in the case of the blue oil stick, rinsing with water is not enough. Therefore, practically the only form of prevention in the case of people susceptible to infection is to avoid public bathing.
