Why is silver poplar useful?

The Latin name of the poplar is Populus, which means “people”. In ancient times, this “folk” tree was planted in large numbers in cities. It grew rapidly, was undemanding to the soil and created shady corners in hot climates.

In addition to sun protection, poplar is also used in medicine. Its kidneys are used for the preparation of infusions, and it has other advantages:

  • powerful poplars are able to purify the polluted air in megacities;
  • tall trunks and silvery foliage adorn boulevards and parks;
  • in villages, the leaves of the plant are used to feed livestock;
  • poplar is a honey plant, and its bark contains tannins;
  • plants are planted on the banks of rivers and lakes to strengthen the slopes.

The disadvantages of the tree include poplar fluff, which affects people prone to allergies. But this only applies to female plants, “poplar-men” do not scatter their seeds.

The plant possesses soft wood, which is used to make furniture, children’s toys, plywood and matches. It is worth growing such a tree in a garden plot only in the northern corner: it will take up a large area and create a lot of shadow. The tree lives for about 600 years.

Tall handsome men liven up the city streets. In their shade it is so nice to hide from the summer heat and heavy rain. And the ability to absorb polluted air makes it easier to breathe.
